Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan on Sunday named newly drafted quarterback Robert Griffin III as the team's starting quarterback.

"He's the starter. Period," Shanahan said told the Washington Post.

Griffin has participated in five rookie practices during the past three days, concluding the mini-camp Sunday.

The Baylor product was selected 10 days ago with the second overall pick in the NFL draft. The Redskins moved up to acquire him by trading first-round picks in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and this year's second round pick.

The Redskins also drafted Michigan State quarterback Kirk Cousins, leaving some doubt about who would run the Redskins' offense.

Shanahan said Griffin has quickly learned the Redskins' system.

"Any time you pick a player with the second pick of the draft and you give up another two No. 1's and No. 2 and you move up four spots, you've got a game plan in mind," Shanahan said. “We're going to adjust our system to what he feels comfortable with, and we'll watch him grow, and we'll do what we feel like he does the best."

Previously, Shanahan had said Griffin only would start when he was prepared for the position. That appears to be now.

"He's great. You can see what an incredible athlete he is," Shanahan said. "I was impressed with the first day. He didn’t have one bust on a formation or a play call, and I've never had that in all the minicamps I've been involved with."
