With just days to go until the NFL Draft begins, the Steelers are one of many teams with veteran quarterbacks facing the age old dilemma of whether to consider drafting the quarterback of the future now and letting him develop or delaying the inevitable for one more season. It’s unknown if Pittsburgh will select a gunslinger in this year’s draft, but Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes that general manager Kevin Colbert would entertain the idea this year for the first time in quite some time. As it stands, the Steelers depth chart of passers is comprised of Ben Roethlisberger and Bruce Gradkowski. Roethlisberger, 31, is entering his tenth year in the league and has a habit of getting hurt. Pittsburgh could only benefit from solid depth at the position. The Steelers aren’t ready quite ready to groom an heir apparent just yet, so a project quarterback like Tennessee’s Tyler Bray could be the solution, Dulac believes. Having foregone his senior season as a Volunteer, Bray would need some time and work, which could fit into Pittsburgh’s timeline. Bray is projected to go anywhere from the second to the fourth round. If the Steelers happen to see him on the board by the time late Friday night or early Saturday afternoon rolls around, that could be the prime opportunity to select him.
