Earlier this week, the NFL decided to invalidate the contract extension Sean Payton signed with the New Orleans Saints. Whether or not you want to think NFL Commissioner Roger "The Hammer" Goodell overstepped his boundaries is another debate, but Sean Payton has a big decision to make now that he is staring at free agency.

Payton and the Lombardi trophy

This will be one of the more closely watched free agency discussions this offseason, and it doesn't even involve a player. What in the world is Sean Payton going to do?

Option 1: Hit the free agent market. Many are speculating that Payton would be a great fit in Dallas. He was an offensive coordinator there prior to taking the head coaching gig in New Orleans. And his family still lives in Dallas. "ZOMG!! He's going to sign with the Cowboys!" And we all know Jerry Jones has deep pockets and will pay someone this offseason. If the Cowboys miss the playoffs, Jason Garrett is a dead man walking. So sure, the Cowboys are in play if Payton walks. So are the Chiefs, Chargers, Bills, Bengals, and.....

Option 2: He stays in New Orleans. For all the talk about Payton bolting to the Cowboys, they seem to be forgetting one thing. This is still Payton's team. He helped build this team, and they're still running his offense. Drew Brees is a quick-strike tactician, and can run the 2-minute offense at any time.  And don't forget, Brees signed a 5-year, $100 million deal in July. I'm sure the Saints aren't willing to part with that much money just to let his head coach walk. Yes, the Saints will still have to offer him a worthy contract. And they should. Football fans witnessed the Saints stumble out of the gate to start the season. They've gotten their footing now, and are making a late dash towards the playoffs. But you could easily see how much the Saints missed him the first four weeks of the season.

For all of the talk surrounding Payton and the Saints bounty program, this will be another test of Payton's character. Sure, we'd all like to get paid a few million, but on the other hand, we will all be watching to see if he runs away from the Saints and a team he helped build or comes back to take the reigns.

Besides, who would you rather have as your quarterback? Tony Romo or Drew Brees?
