Chiefs’ GM John Dorsey Despite rumors of bringing Tony Gonzalez back to Kansas City or acquiring offensive line help via a trade, the Kansas City Chiefs let the NFL trade deadline pass by yesterday without any action being taken.  The lack of any moves shows both faith and patience by the front office with the current roster. Why the Chiefs didn’t do anything Plenty of talent was rumored to be available, but Chiefs’ GM John Dorsey was obviously not feeling any of it was needed badly enough to part with Kansas City’s precious future draft picks. The Chiefs reaching the eight-win plateau this past Sunday already means that Kansas City’s second-round pick in 2014 is gone. Acquiring further talent would have hinged dangerously upon mortgaging the future to try to win now. Finances were also a concern for Kansas City in regards to acquiring players. Many of the names rumored to be on a trading block were there partially because of their price tags. Kansas City has plenty of room under the cap right now, but Dorsey may prefer to use that to extend the contracts of the players currently in-house or bring in the talent that he wants during the offseason. By negotiating new deals with players, the Chiefs can get terms more favorable to them. Another big reason why Kansas City neither sent players packing nor made any pickups was because of the current success of the team. Being halfway through the regular season and still undefeated has only happened one other time in the Chiefs’ history. It’s best not to mess with a good thing. Trading a player away or bringing in a player to upgrade a position might have unsettled the locker room, and other negative consequences will result from that uneasiness. What the lack of moves doesn’t mean It’s not that the 8-0 Chiefs are the greatest team to ever take a NFL field. They have spots where they could use an upgrade, like along the offensive line, and other positions where depth is a real issue such as running back. It’s clear that the Kansas City brass has decided to address these needs in free agency, the draft or development of players currently on the roster. While Kansas City Chiefs fans slept with unrealistic dreams of bringing Gonzalez back for a swan song or adding Hakeem Nicks to the roster to play opposite Dwayne Bowe, Dorsey and the Chiefs were operating in the reality that none of the possible moves made sense considering all the details of the current situation.
