The Detroit Lions’ season hinges on this game. This week and next are two tough tests before a nice stretch of winnable games. However, with the Lions’ back-half schedule it’s conceivable the Lions could be 7-3 heading into Thanksgiving and miss the playoffs. The Lions, I think, would do just fine to get a split of the next two weeks—but if they’re 4-0 heading into Monday Night Football, they’ll be set up for biggest Lions victory in years. With the soft underbelly of their schedule coming up after that, a 5-0 start could propel the Lions into truly rarefied air. However, if the Lions don’t win today, and can’t win on Monday Night, they’ll likely have to win their last three games to make the playoffs: at Oakland, vs. San Diego, and at Lambeau. Betting on breaking a losing streak old enough to vote and smoke cigars against the best team in football on The Frozen Tundra in January is . . . well, a bad bet. Every year, I gnash my teeth waiting for the chance to use the current ye...

Can Rex Ryan Stop the Monster He Created in Baltimore?

With the way the NFL draft and the salary cap work, the NFL is built for the bad teams to get good and the good teams to remain the same.  That being said, it is the coaches that make the most difference.  The best coaches in the NFL are the ones who can find each player’s talent and put them in situations that will allow them to use that talent. When the Baltimore Ravens face...

The Day After the Debacle

FLORHAM PARK–An emotional night and an emotional morning after the meltdown against Baltimore. Rex Ryan told his players last week that after losing to them at home in 2010, he did not, under any circumstances want to lose to the Ravens twice. They’ve now lost to them twice. In fact, the Jets’ consecutive losses to the Ravens pre-date Ryan’s arrival in New York by several...

BGA Stat of the Day: Run Defense

So far this season, here’s how the Jets have fared in terms of stopping outside runs. Over the left side: 16 carries, 160 yards Over the right side: nine carries, 10 yards. Some pertinent comments from Rex Ryan after the jump: We have to have set edges on our defense, and if you don’t do that, that’s where big runs happen, and obviously a 70-yard run is about as big a run as...

Jets (2-1) @ Ravens (2-1)

Rex Ryan and Gang Green come to M&T Bank Stadium this week for some Sunday Night Football action. The Ravens are riding high following their 37-7 shellacking of the St. Louis Rams, while the Jets are licking their wounds after being run over roughshod by Darren McFadden (171 yards) and the Oakland Raiders last week 34-24. Despite being 2-1, the vaunted New York defense has...

While never a flashy player during his career, Thomas has been a key part of the...

The Jets Go From Bad to Awful

Just about everything you need to know about how bad the Jets were in Baltimore on Sunday night can be gleaned from one fact. Yes, Virginia, there are serious problems with Rex Ryan's Jets after...
