Earlier this week, the New England Patriots claimed former Giants tight end Jake Ballard off waivers. Ballard had been removed from the Giants active roster since he likely won’t play in a game during the 2012 season.

Tom Coughlin was disappointed that Ballard was claimed, since the whole plan was that he would clear waivers and be placed on the physically unable to perform list.

Of course, the media has blown this out of proportion, in that Coughlin is allegedly upset with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick for violating an unwritten rule in the NFL.

However, that’s not the case, and there’s no reason to even be discussing the Patriots in any of this.

Coughlin was disappointed because the Giants are losing a good player in a way that was unexpected. Ballard could have been an offensive contributor for a few more years after regaining his health, but that won’t be the case now.

There’s no bad blood at all between Coughlin and Belichick. Unless this was an actual rule in the rulebook, then it’s just an unfortunate circumstance for the G-Men.

In fact, kudos to Belichick for rolling the dice on Ballard, considering he will miss all of next season. Maybe the Patriots expect one of their big time tight ends (Rob Gronkowski or Aaron Hernandez) to leave via free agency when they are eligible, so having Ballard as another option is a smart call.

In any case, yes it’s tough to lose Ballard, who played such a key role in getting the Giants to the Super Bowl. But to waist a roster spot on him knowing that he very well may never be the same player again was too risky for Jerry Reese and the front office.

He would have had to come back from a torn ACL and microfracture surgery. That will be a tall order for him to do.

We here at Big Giants Boom thank Ballard for his all-out effort all the time and wish him the best of luck if he ever suits up in a game for the Patriots—of course, only when they are not playing the Giants.
