The Denver Broncos have chosen former Miami Dolphin defensive coordinator, Vance Joseph, to be their next head coach. Joseph sat down with the Bronco front office on Tuesday and decided to stay in Denver rather than take the San Diego interview on Wednesday.

All signs pointed towards Joseph during the process but the Broncos did their due diligence in evaluating different options. This move makes a lot of sense for an organization that prides itself on defense.

Joseph knew the territory pretty well before hand as he played his college ball and coached at the University of Colorado. The new head coach entered the league as a defensive back coach in 2005 and continued for seven years until he got the nod to defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2016.

The biggest challenge that Joseph will face right away is finding the right offensive coordinator for his staff. An early candidate for the position includes former San Diego coach and former Denver offensive coordinator, Mike McCoy. The former Bronco coordinator coached (2009-2012) under previous head coach, John Fox. During his time in Denver, he helped revamp the rushing attack and create an offensive system that worked for Tim Tebow.

With Joseph’s defensive experience, we can expect to see Denver’s defense get back to its dominant way. With a veteran filled secondary, Joseph will look to bolster the defensive line during the upcoming draft. The former defensive coordinator worked with players such as Ndamukong Suh and Cameron Wake in Miami last year.

The Denver Broncos decided to stay within their identity as a defensive team with this hire. With the right offensive coordinator, this team will be right back in the conversation as a super bowl contender.
