As Wes Welker gained 158 receiving yards in the win over the Raiders, the Patriots WR continued his assault on the single-season receiving yards record held by all-time great Jerry Rice since 1995. Through four games, Welker is on pace not just to break the single-season record of 1,484 yards, but also to destroy it. What would Rice think about someone — about Welker — breaking his record? That’s one of several subjects we talked about in my article in today’s Boston Herald. First, Rice had to learn what his records were. Just like Welker, he wasn’t clear what yardage numbers he had and the ESPN analyst for shows like Audibles needed specifics. “What record is that?” Rice asked me yesterday, laughing. “I don’t even know. I really don’t. I thought about, OK, so what is my record? How many yards did I have? I’m not sure. I really don’t think about the record. I played the game for the love of it.” Sounds like Welker.
