Being the opportunist that he is Mark Arcobello managed to turn a training camp audition into a spot in the Edmonton Oilers’ opening day lineup. He then parlayed that appearance at centre into another game. So even when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was ready to return Arcobello was able to hold down a spot in the lineup which also meant the Oilers could then move Taylor Hall back to left-wing. “Arco’s going about it the right way” head coach Dallas Eakins said. “He’s dying for another game another opportunity another day on the roster. And he’s opened up some eyes with his play. “His play enabled Taylor to buzz back over to the wing.” Arcobello played between Ryan Hamilton and Nail Yakupov in Monday’s 5-4 shootout win over the New Jersey Devils and will be back in the mix on Thursday when the Oilers host the Montreal Canadiens. “It’s high stress but high reward too” said Arcobello of this work-for-more-minutes routine he’s growing accustomed to. “As long as I work hard there’s not

Ryan Smyth scratch indicator of Eakins's requirement for all-out effort

The reason Ryan Smyth watched Monday’s game from the press box is because Dallas Eakins didn’t think it wise to bring up five players from the AHL to replace all the guys he wanted to shelve. The Oilers head coach said there were “four or five” forwards who could have been yanked from the lineup and still might be if their habits don’t change. “I could have had my pick...

Hall says Oilers have to tune out wildly swinging mood of fans

Taylor Hall can understand fans’ frustration. Things were bad in Edmonton long before he showed up on the scene as the first piece of the rebuilding puzzle. But even Hall admits getting booed off the ice after the second period in the second home game of the season Monday seemed harsh. Good thing the Edmonton Oilers came back to beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 in a shootout to...

Warrior commercial features Nail Yakupov and some innuendo

Nail Yakupov is in a commercial for Warrior where he promotes the company's new tagline: Nailed It. In the short spot Yakupov successfully performs different actions and follows it up by saying "Nailed it." He knocks a bottle off the roof of a net, tosses some trash into a garbage can and walks by some attractive ladies. Oh the innuendo! Edgy. At least this...

Oilers rally, beat Devils in shootout

The Edmonton Oilers certainly didn't take the easy route to their first win of the season. Jordan Eberle and David Perron scored in the shootout for the Oilers, who erased a three-goal deficit in the third period against goalie Martin Brodeur and beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 on Monday night. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Andrew Ference, Perron, and Taylor Hall all scored their first...

Eakins making use of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins can-do attitude

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is a bobblehead. It’s not bad enough that he has a couple of cartoon-type nicknames in Hoppy and The Nuge now his coach has gone and called him a bobblehead. Quote-unquote. “The thing I like about Nuge is that he’s a bobblehead” said Dallas Eakins after practice Wednesday to prepare for tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens. “I ask him...

Oilers rally from 3 goals down, top Devils in SO

Jordan Eberle and David Perron scored in the shootout for the Edmonton Oilers, who erased a three-goal deficit in the third period against goalie Martin Brodeur and beat the New Jersey Devils 5-4 on Monday night. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Andrew Ference, Perron, and Taylor Hall all scored their first of the season in a 7:47 span to make it 4-3. But despite getting a power play with 2...

Are the Oilers looking for defensemen?

The NHL season is scarcely more than a week old but the rumour mill is already heating up and one of the teams at the center of it is Edmonton. Now, this is something we should maybe have expected considering the new GM didn’t get to scratch the itch of a “Bold Move” that he was so clearly trying to make in the off-season. Edmonton is loaded with talent up front and...

Oilers’ Mike Brown Nominated for 2013 Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year Award

Move over Movember. Edmonton Oilers’ winger Mike Brown has sported a fashionable mustache in many forms during his career, and his 2013 handlebar lip sweater is finally getting the recognition it deserves — Brown has been nominated for the 2013 Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year Award. The prestigious award is organized by the American Mustache Institute,...

Oilers' Mike Brown up for Mustached American of the Year Award

Mike Brown may play in Canada but he's all-American. He's also rocking one of if not the finest mustache in the league this season. Brown is now getting some due credit for being both American and mustached (though I prefer mustachioed myself). The American Mustache Institute which apparently is a thing that is real has nominated Brown for its Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached...

Dubnyk certain he can turn bad start around, beginning with Canadiens

Devan Dubnyk is getting a chance to totally redeem himself. The Edmonton Oilers goaltender will get the call against the Montreal Canadiens Thursday (7:30 p.m.) at Rexall Place. Dubnyk sat out Monday’s victory over the New Jersey Devils after struggling in his first two games of the season. “I think he just has to settle down a little bit” said Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins...

Canadiens-Oilers Preview

After a disappointing start, the Edmonton Oilers collected their first two points in thrilling fashion last time out. They're hoping to have gotten their early-season nerves out of their system. Edmonton tries to build on its first win Thursday night when it hosts the Montreal Canadiens. While the Oilers (1-2-0) fell 5-4 to Winnipeg in their season opener and 6-2 at Vancouver...

Oilers rewrite tired script with comeback win over New Jersey Devils

The script is seven years old. Fans in Edmonton have seen it a hundred times before. The Oilers start slow. Lethargic second period. Mediocre goaltending. Come to life in the third period. Make a game of it. Make a late costly mistake. Lose. You can set your NHL entry draft by the tragic and well-worn storyline. And Monday at night against the New Jersey Devils they followed...

Morning Line

"Pretty cool. I only got to do it when I was a kid creating my own player in NHL '97." #oilers David Perron on scoring on Martin Brodeur. — Joanne Ireland (@jirelandEJ) October 8, 2013 Perron had two goals last night, one in regulation and the winning shootout goal. Below, you can watch the highlights of the game.  The Devils were up 3-0 at the start of the...
