When it became known Thursday that center Derick Brassard was headed for his seventh healthy scratch in 10 games, Brassard's agent released a sharply-worded statement that was highly critical of Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel. "While I have tremendous respect for (general manager) Scott Howson and the rest of Columbus' management team, the situation regarding Derick Brassard has become untenable," said Brassard's agent, Allan Walsh. "The coach has a history of burying players and using them as scapegoats to mask his own lack of success on the ice. "Derick has been singled out, almost from the very beginning of the season, to be the fall guy in case things don't go well. The Columbus organization cares about Derick and has been good to him, but at some point, one has to say, enough is enough." The statement was first released to The Columbus Dispatch and later to several media outlets. Brassard would not comment, and Walsh declined to answer any questions, saying the statement spoke for itself. After the Blue Jackets' 4-3 shootout win over Calgary, Arniel declined to comment, saying he was "so concerned about my team and our players, that it's not something that gets me." But Howson released a statement through the Blue Jackets' public relations staff, saying: "Scott has my full support with respect to his decisions on who plays and the handling of our hockey team. We all want Derick to play better and be the player we know he can be. The only person who will impact Derick's playing time is Derick himself." NOTES, QUOTES --Thursday's come-from-behind 4-3 shootout win in Calgary was the first of its kind for the Blue Jackets this season, in two different ways. The Jackets were 0-9-1 when trailing after two periods before goals by Nikita Nikitin and Rick Nash sparked a rally from 3-1 down in the final minute. And the Jackets were 0-3 in shootouts before Nash scored the game-winner in the third round. --It would seem that 40 shots on goal is a good thing, a recipe for high-scoring, winning hockey. Not so for the Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets are 0-4 this season when they take 40 shots or more, and have lost their last 10 games in which they take 40-plus shots. The peculiar string dates all the way back to early November of last season. QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're desperate for points right now, fighting for points. These two are big." --- Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash, after sparking a third-period comeback that led to a 4-3 shootout win over Calgary on Thursday. ROSTER REPORTPLAYER NOTES: --D Nikita Nikitin snapped a 40-goal drought without a goal when he scored in the third period Thursday versus Calgary. Nikitin also had two assists in the game, the first three-point game of his career. In 10 games with the Blue Jackets, Nikitin has one goal, seven assists and a minus-5 rating. --G Curtis Sanford, making his eighth straight start, stopped 30 saves in regulation and was perfect 3-for-3 in the shootout to improve to 4-2-2 with the Jackets. He was 3-10 in his career in shootouts, including 0-2 this season, before Thursday's win. --LW Rick Nash scored with 57.2 seconds remaining in regulation to force a tie, then scored the shootout game-winner in the third round Thursday versus Calgary. It was Nash's second game-winner of the season and his first shootout game-winner since Oct. 28, 2010, versus Edmonton. MEDICAL WATCH: --LW Kristian Huselius (torn pectoral muscle) is out until early December. --G Mark Dekanich (groin) came up lame during warm-ups of a minor-league game on Nov. 11 and is out indefinitely. --D Radek Martinek (concussion) is out indefinitely.
