According to gossip queens TMZ, Derek Boogaard's family has officially filed a lawsuit against the National Hockey League Players' Association worth 9.8 million dollars, claiming that the NHLPA failed to file a grivance in time for the family to collect the remainder of Boogaard's paycheck. From the article:

"In the lawsuit, Derek's parents claim he was addicted to prescription pills at the time of his death ... partly because he had been prescribed "a multitude of narcotics and sleeping pills by both the team doctors, physicians, trainers, and dentists of the New York Rangers and the Minnesota Wild."

Because Derek's parents believe the NHL teams are partly responsible for their son's death, they turned to the NHL PA which promised to help them file a grievance to get the Rangers to pay out the rest of Derek's multi-million dollar 4-year contract with the team."

The NHLPA, at least according to the Boogaard family, fulfill that promise. And as such, Boogaard's family is suing for the remaining money from the contract as well as $5 million on top of that.

Not a pretty situation for anyone involved, but this is the last thing the NHLPA, stuck in a lockout and a media war with the owners, wants to deal with right now.
