By Tony Ambrogio (@SNTonyAmbrogio) Getty Images As Mike Komisarek walked into the room, he saw the large media scrum surrounding defenseman Jake Gardiner and said, “Jake Gardiner is free!” A week after his agent sent out a #FreeJakeGardiner tweet, the Toronto Maple Leafs called up the defenseman who will play tonight against Tampa Bay. “He did an excellent job,” Leafs Coach Randy Carlyle said when asked how Gardiner handled his time in the American Hockey League. “We just felt Jake had played very well in the last 10 days.” Korbinian Holzer was sent down to the minors to make room for Gardiner, who had 30 points in 75 games with the Maple Leafs last season as a 21 year-old. But a concussion in the American Hockey League in December kept him off the ice for several weeks. When he played a couple of games with the Leafs in January, Carlyle and Leafs management didn’t like what they were seeing. So Gardiner went down to the Marlies and over the last few weeks he started to show th...

The Good, The Bad and The Return of Jake Gardiner

I apologize for my absence recently, I was on vacation in Florida and was unable to watch the games. But let’s talk about this game instead. The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight by a score of 4-2 in Jake Gardiner’s first game since being recalled (finally) from the AHL yesterday. In the [...]

Leafs' Lupul suspended two games

The NHL has suspended Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul for two games without pay for an illegal check to the head of Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman. The league's department of player safety issued the ruling Thursday, while Toronto prepares to play at Buffalo. The hit occurred a day earlier in the third period of Toronto's 4-2 win. Shortly after Hedman...

Toronto Maple Leafs’ Slide in Standings May Be Due to Lack of Toughness on Defense (Video)

What’s wrong with the Toronto Maple Leafs? Since jumping out to a hot start this season, the Leafs have fallen back to the pack and currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference — just three points ahead of the ninth-place New York Rangers. But what’s to blame? The Instigators all seem to agree that the goaltending has been solid, but Dale Arnold thinks the team is missing...

Toronto snaps 5-game skid in win over Tampa

TORONTO (AP) -- Nazem Kadri had three assists and Joffrey Lupul added a goal and an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs snapped a five-game winless skid with a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night. Dion Phaneuf, Tyler Bozak and Nikolai Kulemin also scored for Toronto. Kadri's three points tied a career high, and he had a chance at a fourth point but was...

Maple Leafs-Sabres Preview

The Toronto Maple Leafs have their budding star to thank for pulling them out of their season-worst slump. Now, they look for him to keep pushing the club toward its first playoff appearance in nearly a decade. Toronto hopes Nazem Kadri can continue his stellar play on Thursday night as the Maple Leafs visit the Buffalo Sabres, a team who may be without its own top scorer as it...

Joffrey Lupul Gets Two Game Banhammer by   Steven Ellis

Yes, Joffrey Lupul may have just returned from a lengthy injury, but the Leafs will be without him for another two games. Lupul will have to sit out the next two Toronto matches after an illegal hit to the head of Victor Hedman in Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Tampa Bay. The incident occurred during the third period of the game [...]

Joffrey Lupul's dirty hit to the head on Victor Hedman

This is an illegal hit to the head and a violation of rule 48. Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffery Lupul is going to get a call from the Department of Player Safety and if he isn't suspended, I will be very surprised. Apparently, this isn't the first time that Victory Hedman has been hit with a questionable and dirty hit this week. Zac Rinaldo also caught Hedman with a very...

Mike Augello: Nonis Open To Buying And Selling At Deadline

Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis made the rounds on Toronto radio Tuesday and indicated that he is open to moving players and adding players in advance of April 3rd trade deadline. “We’re gonna be in the mix with a bunch of teams and I’ve been asked if we’re going to be a buyer or seller and I think the answer there is the possibility of both.” Nonis said to...

Lightning-Maple Leafs Preview

The slumping Toronto Maple Leafs haven't been able to get things together over the last two weeks. The Tampa Bay Lightning, meanwhile, are starting to pick up steam. The Maple Leafs try to snap a season-worst five-game losing streak Wednesday night when they host the Lightning, who continue to play without captain Vincent Lecavalier. After allowing an average of just 2.5 goals...

Eklund: Something Brewin in Toronto...

With yesterday's call up of Jake Gardiner and as is being reported today, Komisarek accepting to waive his no movement clause and either get traded or be moved to the minors, along with several rumors I am hearing of discussions the Leafs are having with Chicago about a forward and Dallas (regarding Derek Roy) I would not be surprised if the next big move in the NHL came out...
