When meeting with the media following today's two-part practice in Greenburgh, NY, head coach John Tortorella reported the latest on the status of defenseman Marc Staal (post-concussion symptoms). According to Torts, Staal will not join the team for practice this week, which likely means he will not be in the lineup for Saturday's match with the Islanders at Nassau Coliseum. Staal will technically be off of injured reserve and eligible to play in that game, but the Rangers wish for him to remain with his doctors at this time.

Pat Leonard of the Daily News asked Tortorella if he was preparing for a long-term absence in regards to Staal, to which the coach responded...

“I don’t know if you prepare that way. We just - whoever’s out there practicing, we’re preparing. And if someday Marc comes in and he’s there, we’re gonna prepare him the best we can to play a game.”

Fair enough.

But you have to assume that Tortorella is as anxious as anyone to get Staal back in the defensive rotation, because there's no question they are hurting on the blue-line without ol' reliable back there. I mean, for goodness sake, they went out and claimed Jeff Woywitka off of waivers. That's desperation if I've ever seen it.

And I mentioned earlier that Wojtek Wolski (groin) and Mike Sauer (shoulder) did not skate today as well. Torts said that both received maintenance days, and for Sauer it was an opportunity for him to work on strengthening his shoulder.
