The University of Minnesota men's hockey squad has headed into a nearly three-week holiday layoff with a 14-5-1 overall record and an 11-3 mark in the WCHA. The latest USCHO national poll has the Gophers ranked No. 2, behind in-state rival Minnesota-Duluth. After last weekend's split at Mariucci Arena against Michigan Tech, Minnesota coach Don Lucia looked back on a successful first half of the season. "It's nice to get a win heading into the break," Lucia said following his team's Saturday win. "And, overall, I think we have put ourselves in a great position for the second half of the season." Minnesota continued a strange trend over the weekend of struggling on Friday night and then bouncing back with a top performance on Saturday. The Gophers are now 8-0-1 on Saturdays, 0-1 on Sundays and just 6-4-0 on Fridays. Included in those Friday numbers is a 1-4 record in their last five Friday night contests.
