INSIDE SHOTS Sanford says he almost retired last month Stuck in the minor leagues and beset by injuries, Blue Jackets goaltender Curtis Sanford told the Columbus Dispatch that he considered calling it quits as recently as last month.Luckily for the Blue Jackets, he didn't follow through.Sanford has taken over the Blue Jackets' No. 1 job from Steve Mason with a stellar run of play that has helped the Blue Jackets improve after getting off to a horrible start this season."I had thoughts of 'that's enough, that's it,'" Sanford told The Dispatch. "When I had the groin injury, I had those thoughts."Sanford spent the previous 2 12 seasons in the minor leagues, enduring a shoulder surgery and a crushed trachea that put him the hospital for two days.Early this season, he suffered a pulled groin that sidelined him for three weeks.Once healthy, he finally got a chance to play. That was eight games ago, and Sanford is 3-2-2 with a .939 save percentage in those games after a 4-1 loss Tuesday night at Vancouver."He's not all over the place," Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. "He's compact. He faces the shooter and prepares himself for the next rebound and that next chance. He's not a guy who expends a ton of energy by flying all over the place."NOTES, QUOTES--The Blue Jackets put 48 shots on goal in Tuesday's 4-1 loss in Vancouver, a franchise record for shots in a road game. The Jackets took 36 shots in the final two periods. The previous club record was 45 shots in Nashville on April 5, 2011.--Tuesday's loss in Vancouver dropped the Blue Jackets to 1-8-2 on the road this season, the worst road mark in the NHL. It's the franchise's worst start on the road since the 2003-04 season, when the Jackets opened 0-11-1-2 before winning their first road game of the season in Chicago on the day after Christmas.QUOTE TO NOTE: "It was almost like he was made of Velcro." -- Blue Jackets goaltender Curtis Sanford, referring to his counterpart, Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider, who made 48 saves in a 2-1 win over the Blue Jackets on Tuesday.ROSTER REPORTPLAYER NOTES:--D Nikita Nikitin, who had played quite well since arriving in a trade with St. Louis earlier this month, was hung with a minus-4 rating on Tuesday in Vancouver. He did total five shots on goal and blocked four shots.--C Sammy Pahlsson ended a 27-game drought without a goal when he scored shorthanded against Vancouver on Tuesday. Pahlsson's last goal was last April 1 vs. Chicago.--LW Kristian Huselius is traveling with the Blue Jackets on their four-game road trip through Canada, an indication that he's nearing his season debut after suffering a torn pectoral muscle over the offseason. Huselius told The Columbus Dispatch that his target date for a return is Dec. 6 vs. Montreal.MEDICAL WATCH:--LW Kristian Huselius (torn pectoral muscle) is out until early December.--G Mark Dekanich (groin) came up lame during warmups of a minor league game on Nov. 11 and is out indefinitely.--D Radek Martinek (concussion) is out indefinitely.GOALTENDERS:--Curtis Sanford--Steve MasonDEFENSE PAIRINGS:--Fedor Tyutin, Nikita Nikitin--Marc Methot, James Wisniewski--John Moore, Grant ClitsomeFIRST LINE:--LW Vinny Prospal, C Jeff Carter, RW Rick NashSECOND LINE:--LW R.J.
