Former Rangers forward Sean Avery, for the most part, uses his Twitter account to discuss fashion and music. Over the weekend, however, he once again caught the attention of the hockey world with some very critical words about his former coach. Avery, who is currently out of the game, decided to weigh in on the Rangers’ current situation, which isn’t a very good one. New York is fighting for its playoff life. The Rangers have lost two in a row, and they are now 3-6-1 in their last 10 games. There are some who are wondering if head coach John Tortorella is still the right man for the job. It’s pretty clear that Avery is one of those defectors. “Fire this CLOWN, his players hate him and won’t play for his BS,” Avery tweeted Saturday night. The ripple effect was apparently enough for Rangers captain Ryan Callahan to release a statement on Sunday. “Sean Avery’s comments solely represent his own thoughts and opinions,” Callahan said via CBSSports.com. “He did not speak for us as a team when he was here and certainly does not now.” One would think that Avery, who played four seasons in New York with the Rangers, might know what he’s talking about. The former forward undoubtedly discussed the coaching situation when he was with the club, but there’s obviously no way of knowing if he’s still speaking for someone in the New York dressing room. Then again, Avery was released by the club last year, so it could be nothing more than bitterness.
