Following the lead of their teammate, Chris Wondolowski, who scored twice in the USMNT game against Cuba in the Gold Cup, the San Jose Earthquakes were able to keep the momentum and score to edge the Seattle Sounders in front of 10,525 fans at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Quakes and Sounders got the game started at 7:38pm. Play started slow with neither team having much luck penetrating the defense third. In the 9th minute Seattle’s Eddie Johnson received a pass from Lamar Neagle and put it in the back of the net for what appeared to be the first goal. It ended up being called back, however, because Johnson was called off-sides. Shortly after the disallowed goal, in the 14th minute of the game, Quakes Rafael Baca restarted the game after a foul with a free kick toward goal. His teammate, Steven Lenhart, headed the ball from the 18 into the box. The Quakes’ Walter Martinez made a spectacular bicycle kick to the goal.
