LATEST STORIES FROM REDS MINOR LEAGUES
Taking a look at spring training chances for the minor leaguers – Part 2
With spring training getting underway this Saturday for our Reds (well, the pitchers and catchers at least. Position players show up next Thursday) , I thought I would take a look at the prospects/minor leaguers who are heading to spring training and talk about their chances to break camp with the big league team. There are 21 players who still have prospect eligibility. Yesterday...

Friday news and notes
John Sickels has taken a look back at “Elite Prospects” from 2003-2007 over the past few days. There are some absolute stars on the list as well as a few flops. One thing that Sickels thought about why a few of the guys flopped was that at the time, he bought into guys breaking out while in the California League and those guys didn’t do much once they left the league...

Stock Drop: What went wrong in 2011
Today I wanted to look at the some of the biggest drops from last years Top 40 prospects list and try to figure out what happened and if there were any reasons to see it coming.
Coming into the season Junior Arias was ranked 12th and coming off of a season where he hit .287/.336/.482 for the Arizona League Reds. Arias has some tools, particularly with the bat. He moved from shortstop...

2011 Season in Review: Stalin Gerson
Stalin Gerson didn’t get his season started right away, as he didn’t make his debut until June. Once he did make his debut though, he had a strong season and a step forward from his 2010 season that he spent with the Billings Mustangs.
Gerson began the year in extended spring training and didn’t get into any games until June, when he made his 2011 debut for the...

Friday news and notes
The Reds have brought back a former prospect, one who was at least well known within Reds prospect circles, Wirfin Obispo. He was a big talked about name when he was dominating for the Dominican Summer League Reds in his first year as a pitcher. However he was caught up in a marriage scandal and was unable to gain a work visa for the United States and headed to Japan after the 2006...

2011 Season in Review: Brodie Greene
Brodie Greene entered 2011 coming off of a 2010 season where he struggled after an aggressive placement in High-A right after being drafted. His average and plate discipline were solid, but his power was didn’t show up in his initial minor league exposure.
The Reds decided to keep Greene at High-A to begin the 2011 season, though this time he headed to Bakersfield instead of...

Comparing the Reds top prospects lists
Today seems like a good day to do a comparison of the top 20 Reds prospects from various places. Two places (myself and Baseball America) released their lists before the Reds trades this offseason, while two others released their lists after the trades. Fortunately, I was one of them and updated my list, while Baseball America went to 30 players so I was able to just move the players...

Friday news and notes and a You Scout (Travis Webb)
The Reds signed Jeff Francis to a minor league deal, which I am sure you have heard about by now. But, maybe you haven’t heard that he has the choice to opt out of his contract by March 28th.With a good spring, I still don’t see him making the rotation unless there is an injury, and if there isn’t, he won’t be with the Reds in April.
MLB.com has released it...

2011 Season in Review: Devin Mesoraco
Devin Mesoraco came into the 2011 season fresh off of a huge breakout year for him in which he hit .302/.377/.587 across three levels. The 2011 season would be a big one, ending with him catching games in Cincinnati for the Reds.
April was pretty much a pick up from where Mesoraco had left off the season before as he would go out and hit .313/.405/.552 with 10 walks and 18 strikeouts...

Monday news and notes
Usually Monday is set for a “2011 Season in Review” article, but there were a lot of things that happened over the weekend worth talking about, so that gets pushed to tomorrow.
Lance McAllister talked with David Bell on Thursday night. You can listen to it here, Bell comes on at the 7:20 mark at the link. He talks about several players, including Denis Phipps (much higher...

2012 John Sickels Farm System Rankings
John Sickels, of MinorLeagueBall.com has completed his grading of the top 20 (or more) prospects in each system. These rankings are not indicative of John’s actual farm system rankings, which he is currently working on and will soon be found on his website. These are based on a system, as described below.
I went through each system that John graded and took down the grade ...

Thursday discussion
So, it is the middle of January and there simply isn’t another article I had in my mind to write for today. So I thought I would pose a few questions that came to mind after listening to the Redleg Nation podcast with Tucker Barnhart yesterday.
When you look at a hitter, be it through stats or scouting, what are the things that you look at the most? Why do you look at those...

Tuesday news and notes
Redleg Nation has up their latest podcast and it features Tucker Barnhart. Go give it a listen, immediately.
The Reds made two signings yesterday. The first was Dioner Navarro, to a minor league deal. The second was for Ryan Ludwick to a MLB deal. Navarro is going to serve as insurance and likely split time with Corky Miller in Louisville. He hasn’t hit in three years, posting...

2011 Season in Review: Zack Cozart
Zack Cozart came into 2011 off of a solid, but unspectacular season at Louisville where he hit .255/.310/.416 at age 24. 2011 wound up being a very important season for his career.
April began without much flash as Cozart went 7 for 56 to start the season (.125) before going on a tear to end the month. The tear at the end of the month wasn’t enough to bring up the overall numbers...

Wednesday news and notes
MLBdirt.com has up an interview with Donald Lutz. Here was my favorite part from the interview:
Who were your favorite team and player growing up and why?: It’s pretty funny because I didn’t get into baseball until I was 15, so I grew up without the sport. I played ice hockey and European handball for 8 years, so I didn’t have any favorite teams or players.
By the time I...
