Polona Hercog defended her Swedish Open title in Bastad on Sunday, rallying from a horrendous start to defeat Mathilde Johansson of France 0-6, 6-4, 7-5.
“In a final everybody wants to win, so the nerves kick in a lot,” Hercog said. “I’m just happy I could calm myself down in the last two games. It was a lot of fighting today and a lot of ups and downs, and I’m very happy to win. Second year in a row is amazing – to be invincible here for two years is unbelievable. Bastad has some kind of magic power for me, I guess!”
Twice Hercog was within two games of defeat during her run to the title, in the quarterfinals against Pironkova and in the final against Johansson.
