While Happy Gilmore 2 didn't exactly go through "development hell" like so many other movies have through the years, there was one unfortunate setback that forced filmmaker Adam Sandler to make sweeping changes mid-production.
In an interview with Collider, the movie star explained that actor Carl Weathers was initially written into the film with a "massive part" reprising his role as Derick "Chubbs" Peterson. Sadly, Weathers passed away in February 2024 before his parts could be filmed.
Sandler lamented that he had been talking to Weathers about his part in the film and the two were excited to work together.
“We had a painful change. Carl Weathers had a massive part,” Sandler said. “I would talk to Carl, and we were excited, and then Carl passed away.”

Weathers' passing forced Sandler to "rewrite a lot of the stuff" and even fundamentally change the entire story. He said that the movie will make multiple references to his character's greatness in the sequel.
“We had to rewrite a lot of the stuff, and even what the story was,” Sandler continued. “We made a lot of nice references to how great Chubbs was in the movie. That was the biggest change.”
Potential spoiler warning ahead!
Sandler revealed that in the original version of his script, Chubbs' son would blame Happy Gilmore for the character's death in the original film. This would result in Chubbs appearing to Gilmore in his dreams.
“In the first version that we came up with, he had a son,” Sandler said of Weathers’ character. “He was coming back to me a lot in my dreams, and he had a son who was mad at Happy for causing the death of daddy.”
Sandler was one of countless people who paid tribute to Weathers after his passing last year. He called Weathers "a true legend" and a great family man.
“A true great man. Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete,” Sandler wrote last year. “So much fun to be around always. Smart as hell. Loyal as hell. Funny as hell,” Sandler continued. “Loved his sons more than anything. What a guy!! Everyone loved him. My wife and I had the best times with him every time we saw him. Love to his entire family and Carl will always be known as a true legend.”
Weathers is one of several original cast members that have sadly passed on in the 29 years since the original film. Knowing how much Sandler appreciated them, we can probably expect to see fitting tributes to all of them in the movie.
