Bob Barker reminisces on 'The Price Is Right' days ahead of 50th season: 'There was much to love'

Bob Barker announced his retirement from The Price is Right in November 2006, and his final episode aired in June 2007. Unsurprisingly, the 97-year-old former host still holds the daily game show near to his heart.

"I'm often asked what I loved most about my years with Price, and the first thing that pops to mind is ... the money, of course!" Barker told People in jest before getting more earnest.

"All kidding aside, there was much to love," Barker continued. "I had the pleasure of working with a dedicated and talented cast and crew for 35 great years. Particularly close to my heart was the ability our vast popularity gave me to remind our entire audience daily about the importance of spaying and neutering your pets."

Barker ended every episode since 1979 with the simple message:

The Price is Right premiered Sept. 4, 1972, with Barker as host. When he decided to retire, Drew Carey was selected to take over hosting duties in July 2007, and the former The Drew Carey Show creator and star has remained in the position.

"Hosting The Price is Right has been a dream job for me," Carey, 63, said for a CBS article officially celebrating television's longest-running game show approaching its 50th season. "And I can't even call it a job with a straight face because I get such joy out of it. Imagine spending every workday surrounded by happy, positive strangers. It's been amazing. I really never thought my safe space would be on a sound stage, wearing a mic, cameras on me constantly, and with millions of people watching. But that’s what The Price is Right is for me. I love it."

The 50th season will premiere Sept. 13.
