Hollywood is striking while the "Glen Powell is going to be a movie star!" iron is hot. "Twisters" was successful, "Hit Man" was big on Netflix for adults who wanted a comedy actually made with adults in mind, and he's stepping into Arnold Schwarzenegger's shoes for another take on "The Running Man." If "The Running Man" doesn't work (and we think it will), maybe that will be a hitch in the Powell trajectory, but Amazon MGM has already grabbed him to star in a movie directed by Ron Howard.
The film, which appears to be untitled, focuses on two childhood friends who have become firefighters dealing with personal conflict while trying to manage a series of Texas wildfires. Powell is a Texas boy, and definitely reads like a dude who could be a firefighter, so he makes a ton of sense for this film. Apparently the pitch from Christina Hodson was good enough that Amazon MGM bought it before hiring her to actually write the screenplay. Then, they also got Howard to direct.
Now, the Howard of it all is a reason to temper enthusiasm. Howard is a consummate professional. He will handle a production with aplomb, avoid chaos, and deliver you a movie that is a B-minus or a C-plus version. Of course, even if the movie isn't a theatrical smash, you know what is the home of movies people watch on the couch and think to themselves, "Yeah, that was okay." Amazon Prime.
This is a high-floor, low-ceiling proposition for Howard, Powell, and Amazon. For a guy trying to establish himself as a movie star, the occasional solid single isn't a bad thing. Plus, if film doesn't work out for Powell, there's always television.
