I Know What You Did Last Summer director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is opening up about that epic Sarah Michelle Gellar dream sequence cameo and how they managed to keep it a secret.
When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.
She told Entertainment Weekly that she explored "a couple of different iterations of how Helen was gonna fit in the movie." As for how they protected the secret, she continued to share, "It was one of those things where it was kind of lock and key. It was never even in any of the pages. They were kind of pages unto themselves, and we really tried to do it as secretively as we could, so that it didn't get out that she was in the movie. I think we succeeded."
Of course, that wasn't the only big cameo they needed to protect: Brandy's also makes her return as Karla. "Her house has to be gorgeous. Her man has to be gorgeous. Her life has to be perfect," Robinson expressed. "Karla is living. Capital 'L' living. And I needed her to have the best life ever. That was so important to me."
She added, "Just like Helen, it was kind of like a couple of different iterations of how Karla could fit into the movie. But all of that also was in tandem with how Julie James fit into the movie."
Brandy was on board with the idea of reprising her role without hesitation: "She was so excited. She was like, 'Yes, of course, I wanna come back. I love I Know What You Did Last Summer.'
The legacy sequel is now playing in theaters.
