Mindy Kaling Explains Why She’s Been Staying Behind the Camera
Rodin Eckenroth/Getty Images

After making a name for herself as a writer and star of The Office and the creator and lead of The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling took a step back from the spotlight. She has had some acting roles since, but she has stuck mostly to producing work, having co-created the TV shows Champions, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls and Running Point.

In fact, her most recent onscreen role came in 2023. But Kaling knows a more substantial return to acting is overdue.

Never Have I Ever, a show literally about an Indian American family in Southern California, and if I wasn’t on that — what’s wrong with me?” Kaling said during a Paley Media Council Series conversation last week, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Kaling explained that she’s been a bit camera shy because her producing ventures have panned out well. “I think there is a part of me that feels a little superstitious,” she said. “I’m like, these seem to have gone well, and I’m not in them, so maybe I’ll wait.”

Kaling did say, however, that she misses acting and that she “would like to write or co-create a show for [herself] to act in soon.”

In fact, she said, it’s “unbelievably fun” and “so efficient” to be both creator and star of a TV show. “I would love to do that again. That’s the thing that maybe in the next couple years, when I launch a couple other things that are earlier in the pipeline, that would be something that would be fun to do again.”

It’s not like Kaling has been resting on her laurels, though. She’s also a mother of three: a 7-year-old daughter, a 4-year-old son, and a 15-month-old daughter.

At an Emmy consideration event last month, Running Point star Kate Hudson praised her boss’s work ethic during the development of the show, saying Kaling even worked through her labor.

“We had a script, like our first table read,” Hudson recalled, per People. “She’s on Zoom. She then has the baby and is sending notes, like, an hour after she has the baby. I was like, ‘Isn’t Mindy literally in labor?’ … She is a powerhouse and delivers what she says she’s going to deliver.”

So if Kaling promises another star turn on screen, it seems like she’s going to deliver!

Bears GM speaks out after superstar goes down with injury

Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson is expected to miss most of training camp due to a leg injury, per ESPN’s Courtney Cronin. Johnson was placed on the non-football injury list when veterans reported to Chicago for camp. He suffered the injury during offseason training, according to Bears general manager Ryan Poles. Johnson is coming off his second consecutive Pro Bowl and is headed into the second year of a four-year, $76M deal. He has dealt with a number of injuries over his career, playing no more than 15 games in a season over the first four years of his career. In 2024, he played a full season for the first time, starting all 17 games with a career-high 1,032 snaps. An extended absence into the regular season would force Chicago to find another starting cornerback among their veteran depth, but Poles said that the team is not “overly concerned” about a long-term injury. “We’ve got a lot of faith that he’s going to put in the time to rehab and be his full self when he comes back,” said Poles on Tuesday. 2023 fifth-rounder Terell Smith will likely step into a first-team role in Johnson’s absence. Chicago largely relied on a cornerback trio of Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson and Kyler Gordon last year; Smith is the only remaining defensive back on the roster who played at least 150 snaps on the boundary for the Bears in 2024, according to Pro Football Focus. Offseason signings Nick McCloud and Tre Flowers may also see a bump in reps over the coming weeks as Johnson rehabs his leg with his eyes on returning for the Bears’ Week 1 opener against the Vikings.

Rece Davis Reveals Who He Thinks Will Win QB Battle At Notre Dame

Notre Dame’s quarterback battle is one of the more compelling storylines entering the 2025 college football season. With Steve Angeli transferring after spring practice, the competition is down to two names: Kenny Minchey and five-star freshman CJ Carr. ESPN’s Rece Davis believes Carr is the favorite to win the job, though he emphasized it’s just speculation based on public perception. “I think most believe it will be Carr, ultimately,” Davis said. “That’s not Pete Thamel news breaking it... I’m just saying the outside perception for those of us who watch think it will probably be Carr.” Carr, the son of former Michigan QB Jason Carr and grandson of ex-Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr, made headlines after a strong showing in the spring game. But ESPN insider Pete Thamel added some nuance to the situation, revealing that those inside the program have been impressed with Minchey throughout the offseason. “Everyone saw Carr crush the spring game, and I think that’s where sentiment and perception came from,” Thamel said. “But Minchey is an impressive guy, and he hits better with what Mike Denbrock has done.” Minchey, a redshirt freshman, brings more mobility to the table, something Denbrock has used to his advantage in past offenses with Jayden Daniels at LSU and Riley Leonard at Duke. Carr, meanwhile, is a polished passer who fits the mold of a traditional pro-style quarterback. Denbrock previously coached at Notre Dame twice (2002 to 2004 and 2010 to 2016). Notre Dame's new offensive coordinator may influence the final decision, but the schedule adds pressure. Freeman and the Fighting Irish open the season at Miami, in what could prove to be their toughest opponent during the regular season. Davis says nothing’s off the table: “I asked Marcus that. His response... was ‘I will do whatever it takes to help this team win football games.’” Whether that means a two-quarterback system or not, Notre Dame needs a clear leader at the helm if it wants to stay in the playoff hunt.

Brewers Reportedly Listening On Trade Offers For Veteran Starter

Brewers Reportedly Listening On Trade Offers For Veteran Starter

The Milwaukee Brewers aren't going to be categorized as sellers at this year's Trade Deadline, but they very well could trade from their big league roster. The starting rotation is an area of abundance for the Crew and it's always in high demand at this time of year. The Brewers have Nestor Cortes returning from the IL soon after missing the last four months almost with a flexor strain. Milwaukee's rotation is already filled with a mix of veterans (Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruff, Jose Quintana) and high performing rookies (Quinn Priester, Jacob Misiorowski), leaving little room to find a spot for Cortes. A trade of a veteran starter may be the easiest solution to the problem and according to Bob Nightengale, that's exactly what the Brewers are open to. In Nightengale's Sunday notes column, he writes that the Brewers are starting to listen to trade offers for veteran Nestor Cortes. Cortes has made just two starts this season, the first one being a disaster in New York and the second one being much better, going six shutout. Still, we haven't seen Cortes pitch in a big league game since early April. It would be tough for the Brewers to rely on him for the stretch run and move out a piece that has been healthy and reliable the whole time. Granted, the potential return for a rental starter like Cortes that has pitched in just two big league games this year isn't going to be anything earth shattering. But if Cortes sticks around, it's going to create a difficult logjam to manage in the Brewers rotation. Jose Quintana has struggled a little bit of late and is another veteran that could potentially be on the block if the Brewers end up keeping Cortes around. It seems difficult to envision a scenario in which both Quintana and Cortes are in the Brewers starting rotation on August 1st. Given the report that the Brewers are listening on Cortes, it appears that Milwaukee has their preference on who they would want to keep. The Trade Deadline is coming up on Thursday afternoon at 6 PM ET.

Red Sox Rumors Intensifying For $12 Million All-Star Slugger

The American League is wide open and the Boston Red Sox have a star-studded roster that can go on a run. Boston's season has been full of inconsistency so far, but it showed just how good it can be with a 10-game winning streak just before the All-Star break. It's important to note that the Red Sox have navigated serious injury after serious injury all season to this point. The Red Sox's starting rotation has been hit hard from the start. Right now, the rotation doesn't have Tanner Houck or Hunter Dobbins and Kutter Crawford hasn't been ready to go for a start this season. Offensively, the Red Sox lost Triston Casas for the season and Alex Bregman for a while. Recently, the Red Sox lost Marcelo Mayer to a wrist injury as well. Boston has been bitten by the injury bug and yet it finds itself firmly in the mix for a playoff spot and entered play on Sunday with a 56-50 record. There were just three teams in the American League with more wins than Boston entering play on Sunday. The standings are wide open and if the Red Sox add some more pop to the lineup, they can firmly cement themselves as contenders. With four days to go until the trade deadline, rumors have begun picking up steam between Boston and the Tampa Bay Rays involving All-Star first baseman Yandy Díaz. ESPN's Buster Olney is the latest to talk about the possibility. "The Rays' struggles over the last month have really surprised other teams -- and the Rays' staffers, too -- and now Tampa Bay could shift to become sellers," Olney said. "Yandy Díaz would be an absolutely perfect fit for the Red Sox. He's making $10 million this year (the Red Sox would be on the hook for about a third of that), and he has a very attractive $12 million option for 2026." Olney isn't the only insider who has openly talked about Díaz and Boston. He would be the perfect fit. He's currently slashing .286/.345/.475 with 18 homers and 61 RBIs in 99 games. Getting that type of production at first base would be a game-changer. Luckily, the deadline is just four days away so we won't have to wait long to see if this is just speculation, or something that has a real chance of happening.
