Timothee Chalamet spent years preparing to play Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown." It paid off, as the movie went from being viewed skeptically to being a critical and commercial success. Then, Chalamet got an Oscar nomination and it felt like he was neck-and-beck with Adrien Brody for Best Actor. While Chalamet fell short, and now won't be able to beat Brody's record for youngest Best Actor winner, he's still dedicated to the cause and the craft. Apparently, that includes training hours on end to plausibly play a ping pong legend.
"Marty Supreme" is Josh Safdie's 2025 film after the bifurcation of the Safdie brothers (Benny's "The Smashing Machine" also comes out this year). The movie is inspired by real-life ping pong legend Marty Reisman, with Chalamet in the lead role. You may know this as the movie Gwyneth Paltrow was talking about when she let loose in that oh-so-Paltrow way of hers. However, beyond all the sex there's also plenty of ping pong, and that is an area where Chalamet was dedicated to honing his craft.
This is according to the movie's cinematographer Darius Khondji. He said that Chalamet trained for "months and months" at the art of table tennis, and that, "He wanted to be like a real [professional] ping pong player when he started shooting." So, you know, like this:
Chalamet is dedicated to being the new king of the holiday season, so "Marty Supreme" comes out on Christmas day. Bring your friends who love ping pong. Bring your horny friends whose ears perked up when Paltrow started talking the movie up. Bring 'em all.
