Most television sets serve their purpose as the backdrop for scenes and nothing more. But some television sets are pure magic — good enough to make us wish we lived inside them.
Never has a small town looked quite so idyllic. Stars Hollow is the most charming place imaginable, and every time we watch Gilmore Girls, we’re completely enchanted. From the gazebo to the Dragonfly Inn to Rory and Lorelai’s house, every part of that town is magical, no matter what season.
It’s hard not to want to step inside a period piece, especially when it depicts some of the wealthiest people of the era. Life inside Mad Men wouldn’t be fun. The blatant sexism would make for a very hostile work environment, so we wouldn’t want to stay too long, but a day or two inside 1960s New York City wouldn’t be the worst thing.
Who wouldn’t want to live in a castle in England in the early 1900s? Sure, we would miss our modern conveniences, namely air conditioning, but we could make do if it meant dressing to the nines and having a household staff. We would obviously be members of the Crawley family in this scenario.
The drama and occasional white-collar crime aside, living inside Gossip Girl would be an absolute dream. We’d happily go to a party at the Van der Woodsens’ apartment, celebrate a holiday at the Waldorfs’, or visit Chuck’s suite at the Empire. Heck, we’d even live in the Humphreys’ place in Brooklyn if it meant spending the day romping around town with Manhattan’s elite.
When we say we want to live inside The O.C., we mean one place: Kirsten and Sandy’s house. The Cohens live in an oasis replete with a guest house, an infinity pool, and stunning views of the ocean. Who wouldn’t want to live there? It’s basically heaven, and we can’t help by envy Ryan for having the guest house to himself.
Yes, we would live inside a bar if given the opportunity. But only Cheers. Not only is it the place where everybody knows your name, but it’s also got a charming aura about it. We could sleep on the couch in Sam’s office and work behind the bar to earn our keep. It’s a foolproof plan.
Coffee at Central Perk, Thanksgiving at Monica and Rachel’s apartment, visiting the chick and the duck at Chandler and Joey’s apartment? Every place in the Friends world is cozy and warm, and we’d give anything to step inside it. We’re currently considering painting our walls purple.
There’s no way for us to step foot inside Bikini Bottom, but that doesn’t make it any less appealing. We’d love to grab a Krabby Patty at the Krusty Krab or hang out in SpongeBob’s pineapple. If Sandy can find a way to breathe at the bottom of the ocean, so can we.
Every season of The White Lotus takes place in a different setting, and we’d happily live inside any of them. A beach-front paradise in Hawaii? A stunning Sicilian resort? It doesn’t get much more idyllic than that. If The White Lotus were an actual chain of hotels, we’d be selling our souls for a week at any location.
Bridgerton makes Regency-era England look awfully romantic. Sure, it’s only like that for the wealthy, but if we were stepping inside the set, we’d be one of those wealthy people. And we’d be attending parties in corsets and playing games on the lawn. We’d somehow not be sweating, and it would be as beautiful as it looks on Netflix.
When we say we want to live inside Emily in Paris, we basically mean we want to live in Paris. But our version is the one that’s depicted in the show, where we attend product launch parties, go to fashion shows, and take weekend trips to the South of France.
Yes, we would like to live at the North Pole, thank you very much. Everyone’s idea of the perfect North Pole looks a little different, but the one inside The Santa Clause and the two subsequent films and spin-off series look pretty damn magical.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is another period piece we want to step inside. We’d take living in most any of their homes for a chance to time travel to New York City in the ‘50s. And to see Midge perform live at a comedy club? That would be the perfect night out.
Once again, we have a caveat for living inside The Good Place. We want to live in what Eleanor, Chidi, Jason, and Tahani think is The Good Place. That set is a utopia, just like Michael wants them to think it is. Sure, there are obvious flaws that tip off Eleanor, but if you don’t put too much thought into it and simply take it at face value, it’s a pretty and fun place to live.
Take us to Schmigadoon or Schmicago. Either one would be incredible. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea to step inside a musical, but the music inside Schmigadoon is catchy, and the lyrics are clever. And the towns are about as charming as it gets. You might get slightly annoyed, but you’d never be bored.
There’s just something about Lucy and Ricardo’s apartment that makes us happy. We’d love to wake up and have breakfast at the table with Ricardo, spend the day at home with Lucy and Little Ricky, and maybe get into some antics along the way. We’d even be happy to live in black and white.
Being a castaway wouldn’t be ideal, but being stuck on the island with Gilligan and the gang seems awfully fun. And if you’re going to be a castaway anywhere, you’d want it to be on this island, where your hair is always perfect, your skin is tan but not burnt, and you’re not starving.
To some, Pawnee, Indiana, is just a crappy made-up Midwestern town with a rampant raccoon problem. But to those who recognize its true charm, it’s an endearing small town with a lovely city hall that we’d be happy to call home.
If we had to redo college, we might choose to attend Glendale Community College. There’s nothing remarkable about the school itself, but it’s strangely comforting. And if living inside the Community set meant studying with Jeff’s study group, we’d be sold.
Yes, the Addams family is creepy and kooky and mysterious and spooky, but it’s all part of their charm. Living inside their museum would be a dark, macabre experience, but there’d be plenty of ways to stay occupied. And if you could manage to visit on Halloween, it’d be the ultimate way to spend the holiday.
