The dust hasn't fully settled on the third season of "The White Lotus" just yet, as fans and critics continue to parse the finale. In fact, show creator Mike White is still doing the rounds talking about the season. He's not the only "White Lotus" creative who has been doing interviews, though. Cristobal Tapia de Veer had been working as the show's composer, but he told the "New York Times" that he will not be back for the fourth season. Referring to issues with Mike White, de Veer said, "We already had our last fight forever."
Now, if it seems odd to you a TV composer is talking with the "New York Times" about not working on "The White Lotus" any longer, well, White seems to agree, and he had plenty to say on the matter.
White was on Howard Stern, which is not a place one goes to be demure and cagey by and large. He began by saying:
I honestly don’t know what happened, except now I’m reading his interviews because he decides to do some PR campaign about him leaving the show. I don’t think he respected me. He wants people to know that he’s edgy and dark and I’m, I don’t know, like I watch reality TV. We never really even fought. He says we feuded. I don’t think I ever had a fight with him.
And then, to pull no punches, added:
I knew he wasn’t a team player and that he wanted to do it his way. I was thrown that he would go to the "New York Times" to s--- on me and the show three days before the finale. It was kinda of a b---- move.
Of course, such a feud feels very of a piece with the HBO-by-way-of-soap-opera nature of "The White Lotus." White will be fine without de Veer, and to be fair, the composer won an Emmy for the show and likely won't struggle to find work. It's just a level of public quarrel between known creatives that one rarely gets these days.
There is plenty more "White Lotus" talk with White on Stern, naturally. While as of this writing no clips have been posted on the Howard Stern YouTube page, one presumes they will arrive soon enough. Assuredly one of them will include these quotes from White, because Stern's team aren't idiots.
