The Mets (23–13) secured a masterful 5-4 win last night over the Arizona Diamondbacks (18-17), with the 9th-inning closeout capped by a vintage Edwin Díaz performance — complete with his signature "Baboom!" shout.
Again, the Mets will face the Diamondbacks in Phoenix for Game 2 of the three-game series. In Game 1, the Mets got their groove back. While they gave up three runs in the last two innings due to Mets reliever Dedniel Núñez walking three straight batters, they came in clutch when it mattered most.
The Mets' reliable left-handed starter, David Peterson (3.06 ERA), will take the mound opposite the Diamondbacks' right-handed starter, Zac Gallen (4.93 ERA). With Peterson at the mound, the Mets will most likely take Game 2 in the May 2025 series.

Pete Alonso: Alonso comes to the plate with purpose at every at-bat. He continues his MVP-caliber season with a slash line of .349/.469/.674, leading the team in HRs (9), RBIs (33), and hits (45). He added 2 RBIs and a double in the Game 1 win last night.
David Peterson: On the mound tonight for New York, Peterson enters with a solid 2–1 record and a 3.06 ERA over 6 starts. The lefty has been steady in the rotation, logging 32.1 innings with 30 strikeouts and a 1.36 WHIP. While his ERA has slightly faltered, he is going to give the Mets a fantastic start in Game 2.
Francisco Lindor: Lindor went 2-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs in Game 1 of the series. He’s now hitting .289 with 7 homers and 22 RBIs while delivering unstoppable shortstop defense (including last night's unbelievable 9th-inning tagout).
Corbin Carroll: Despite the loss in Game 1, Carroll remains the D-backs' most potent offensive contributor. He went 2-for-4 and has garnered a season slash line of .287/.352/.593 with 10 HRs, 27 RBIs, and 28 runs in 35 games.
Josh Naylor: A reliable hit producer in the middle of the order, Naylor added another hit in Game 1 and is hitting .310 in the 2025 season with a .384 OBP and 21 RBIs. He’s known for his long at-bats and is among the toughest outs in the NL right now.
Zac Gallen: Takes the mound tonight in Game 2. Gallen looks to bounce back from a rough start to 2025 (2–4, 4.93 ERA) but still ranks among the NL strikeout leaders with 43 Ks in 38.1 innings.

*2025 MLB Mets and Diamondbacks stats current as of 8:00 PM ET 05/06/2025
The Mets were favored last night (and won) and are now favored to win Game 2 of the May 2025 series. While the Mets gave up an unfortunate number of hits and runs in the 8th, it was due to Mendoza testing a new pitcher, Dedniel Núñez, who proceeded to walk three batters, leaving Mets reliever Reed Garrett in a very deep hole.
Don't expect Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza to make the same mistake again. The Mets will win Game 2 and take the series.
