Trade Rumors Intensify for Cubs and Slugger
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs are set to be one of the biggest players in the free agent and trade markets when the offseason officially begins.

They've made it clear that they would like to re-sign Cody Bellinger, but have also reiterated that they aren't in the business of handing out massive contracts with some downside attached to it.

The star outfielder had a resurgent season with the Cubs in 2023, but handing out a monstrous financial commitment could be disastrous if that was just a one-year thing.

Instead, Chicago could be looking to make a major splash with a blockbuster trade.

Jesse Rogers of ESPN said he expects that to be the case when he appeared on a local radio show to discuss offseason plans.

"I think they’re more likely to make some big trades than some big free agent signings…It’s not often I predict a big offseason trade, (but) I think they will probably make one. They built up that farm system enough that they’re willing to make a trade. And also the fact that the free agent class isn’t great beyond (Cody) Bellinger and (Shohei) Ohtani. My prediction from the end of the season has been solidified during these playoffs talking to people. (The Cubs) are more likely to make a big trade than to make a big free agent signing," he reported.

Rogers also has previously linked the Cubs to New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso.

He said that it's unlikely that the Mets will extend Alonso past this season and they could be looking for something in return before he hits free agency following the 2024 season.

First base is a target of Chicago this offseason and will aggressively pursue a trade for him.

Adding Alonso to this lineup would be the exact type of power bat that this front office wants moving forward.
