J.R. Smith could again find himself a teammate of LeBron James if his workout with the Lakers goes well. Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Lakers created a roster spot this past weekend by waiving veteran guard Troy Daniels. It’s rather clear what the plan was here. Find an upgrade on the free-agent market.

Almost immediately, reports surfaced that the Lakers had planned a workout with former Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters.

We can now add J.R. Smith to the mix. According to Shams Charania of The Ahletic, Smith will have a workout with the Lakers at some point early this week.

Smith, 34, has not suited up since early last season as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played just 11 games.

Teammates with LeBron James in Cleveland for parts of four seasons, he was a major cog on the team that earned four consecutive Eastern Conference titles. Smith averaged 10.3 points and shot 38% from three-point rang during that span.
