49ers add RB Trenton Cannon off waivers from Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers both encountered injury setbacks to their rushing attacks early this season and now have something else in common.

The 49ers announced Wednesday they've claimed running back Trenton Cannon off waivers from the Ravens one day after San Francisco ball-carrier Raheem Mostert confirmed he required season-ending knee surgery.

Baltimore previously lost running backs Gus Edwards, J.K. Dobbins and Justice Hill to season-ending injuries but later added veterans Le'Veon Bell, Devonta Freeman, and Latavius Murray. Murray tallied 28 rushing yards on 10 carries in Monday's overtime loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, while Cannon gained five yards on two attempts that night.

Baltimore waived Cannon on Tuesday, the same day the 49ers signed Kerryon Johnson to the practice squad.

Cannon will now fall behind rookie sixth-round draft selection Elijah Mitchell, JaMycal Hasty and Trey Sermon on the San Francisco depth chart. Mitchell impressed this past Sunday by rushing for 104 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in the win at the Detroit Lions.

"The young guys — like Elijah did in the game and Hasty, I’ve seen it last year with Hasty, he’s always ready to roll. He’s a gamer," San Francisco starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said of the team's running backs on Wednesday. "And then we’ll bring Trey along, get him ready for this week. I mean, they’re a good group — they really are. They complement each other well. It’s a little bit different take with each one of them, they each have their own style of doing it. But it’s all effective. And I think with the O-line we’ve got, tight ends, fullbacks, and receivers blocking, it makes for a good group."

Garoppolo and company play at the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday coming off Philadelphia's dominant 32-6 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1.
