Darius Slay went scorched earth on Matt Patricia after the Detroit Lions dealt him to the Philadelphia Eagles, and it sounds like the star cornerback wasn’t the only member of the team to have issues with the head coach.
Former Lions tight end Garrett Hudson not only echoed Slay’s unflattering sentiments about Patricia in a series of Twitter dispatches, he took it a step further by calling the coach “literally the worst person I’ve encountered in my entire football career.”
Hudson, who was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2018 but released last May and has yet to appear in an NFL game, went on to provide examples for how he arrived at that conclusion.
Matt Patricia is literally the worst person I’ve encountered in my entire football career. I was excited when the lions cut me. It was that bad— Garrett Hudson (@G_Hudson46) March 20, 2020
He cussed out Keryon Johnson in front of the whole team because he didn’t know what year ford field was constructed— Garrett Hudson (@G_Hudson46) March 20, 2020
Let me give more detail on this. It was funny as hell and Keryon didn’t seem affected by it. Some guys don’t mind his personality and way of doing things. Myself, and a lot of other guys would’ve liked it different but it’s his team, his rules.— Garrett Hudson (@G_Hudson46) March 20, 2020
Slay made some pretty alarming allegations about Patricia this week after his trade to the Eagles, saying he lost total respect for the coach “as a man” due to his conduct.
Given there is always two sides to every story, a Lions source emerged and accused Slay of being a “major cancer” on the team last season. Slay disputed the allegation.
A cancer lol!!! I would love to kno who said that! https://t.co/0jbT2WB1IY— Darius Slay (@_bigplayslay23) March 20, 2020
Patricia of course comes from the Bill Belichick coaching tree, and it’s likely he adopted some of his mentor’s more standoffish, impersonal tendencies.
Still, another player’s condemnation of Patricia, while corroborating Slay’s to some extent, hardly makes the case that the head coach is universally disliked by Lions players.
