The Boston Bruins have signed general manager Don Sweeney to a two-year extension through 2028, securing leadership ahead of a critical offseason marked by coaching uncertainty and roster questions.

Cam Neely says Sweeney’s plan still holds weight

The Boston Bruins are doubling down on their front office direction. On Monday, team president Cam Neely confirmed that Don Sweeney has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him in charge through the 2027–28 season.

The move reinforces ownership’s trust in the long-time GM despite another spring of playoff heartbreak and major changes on the horizon.

Sweeney was entering the final year of his previous deal.

Now, with the coaching position vacant and pivotal roster decisions looming, he’s fully empowered to shape the next chapter of Bruins hockey.

Don has navigated a disappointing period for our club with conviction, purpose, and a clear vision toward the future of the Boston Bruins,

He made difficult decisions around the trade deadline with the confidence they will pay dividends as we craft a path back to contention.

He is continuing to follow that track with a robust and thorough search for our club’s next head coach, while also preparing for the upcoming NHL Draft and free agent signing period.

I am confident in the plan he has followed these past few months, and excited for what’s to come for our team.

Neely said.

The expectations in Boston have always been clear. It’s about winning championships.

Sweeney acknowledges pressure, says responsibility is a privilege

I am very appreciative to Charlie, the entire Jacobs family, and to Cam for their continued trust and support.

It’s an honor to be part of a franchise with such a storied history and passionate fanbase.

I fully understand and embrace the responsibility that comes with this role.

Our fans have high expectations for this team, and so do I.

said Sweeney.

The collective goal is to build a team that makes Bruins fans proud and ultimately brings another Stanley Cup back to Boston.

He was named the NHL’s GM of the Year in 2019, though recent years have brought tough calls and high-pressure scenarios—none more so than the last two first-round exits.

Sweeney’s extension doesn’t ease the pressure—it amplifies it.

But for a franchise that prides itself on stability and standards, betting on familiarity over a reset speaks volumes.

And as the Bruins look to reshape their identity, they’re doing so with the same architect still at the drawing board.
