Kane’s dramatic OT buzzer-beater taken away after review

Less than two weeks away from the NHL trade deadline, Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane is making plenty of headlines on and off the ice.

As a pending UFA on the basement-dwelling Blackhawks, Kane is a strong candidate to be moved in the days leading up to March 3. And he might just be playing his way into netting a bigger return.

Kane scored two games in a game against the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 17. Two days later, he recorded a hat trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday, Kane almost took it a step further. The 34-year-old winger found himself on a breakaway in overtime and, with time set to expire, wound up for a slap shot from the high slot.

It went in. Cue the goal horn, Chelsea Dagger, and the cheers of 18,083 fans. What a way to cap off what might be the final home game of Kane’s tenure in Chicago.

Upon video review, the officials determined the puck didn’t cross the goal line behind Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson until after the game clock had officially reached 00.0 seconds.

Instead of being the overtime hero, Kane finished the game with seven shots, one assist, and a -1 rating. Thompson got the better of him in the shootout, too, although Chicago ultimately took a 3–2 win.

It’s been that kind of season for Kane, who has mostly struggled to stay afloat at both ends of the ice. Prior to his three-game outburst over the last week, Kane had recorded just nine goals and 35 points to go along with a -29 rating in 50 games to start the year.

Kane is, of course, a three-time Stanley Cup champion with 1,221 points in 1,159 career games. It remains to be seen whether the Blackhawks will be able to find a suitor for Kane, particularly with the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs all but ruled out after already making big splashes.

For now, Kane remains with the Blackhawks as they get set to embark upon a four-game road trip to Dallas, San Jose, Anaheim, and Arizona. Assuming he isn’t scratched for trade-related reasons, Kane will look to pick up a point in a fourth consecutive game when the ‘Hawks visit the Stars on Wednesday.
