Steve Young: Jets 'committed' to drafting Zach Wilson
Brigham Young Cougars quarterback Zach Wilson Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame quarterback and ESPN analyst Steve Young appeared on the Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks Podcast to discuss his former team’s recent trade up to No. 3 overall in this year’s NFL draft.

While he provided his thoughts on which players may or may not be available, one thing was for certain: The New York Jets are essentially a lock to select BYU quarterback Zach Wilson.

“There’s no question in my mind, if [the 49ers] can figure out how to get Zach [Wilson], that’s their No. 1 first choice,” Young said. “I just don’t know how they get it done. The Jets have committed to Zach and recruited the family. I just don’t know how that gets undone, but you know, look, a lot can happen.”

This all but confirms the rumor that the 49ers’ brass knew whom the Jets planned on selecting with the second overall pick.

Wilson has shown incredible arm talent during his time at BYU, at times drawing comparisons to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. His elite playmaking ability outside of the pocket as well as making throws into tight windows are second to none in this draft class.

After an impressive pro day that saw Wilson toss a 40-yard-plus ball across his body while momentum propelled him in the opposite direction, it’s clear why teams are enamored with the BYU product.

Wilson thrived in the zone-rushing scheme BYU implemented at a league-high level in 2020. Coincidentally, it’s a similar scheme the Jets will most likely utilize under new offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.

With Sam Darnold’s struggles leading to an impending decision on his contract (an $18.8 million guarantee on a fifth-year option), it’s doubtful the Jets decide to move forward with Darnold.

The stars are seemingly aligning en route to a New York Jets-Zach Wilson professional marriage.
