Memories Of Kevin Malone:
L.A. Dodger Talk: Mark Timmons asks what the best pitch in baseball is. He says it's the changeup, and i'm partial to that answer. Why? Mainly because pitchers with overwhelmingly mediocre raw talent can turn in amazing careers living off a below average fastball, a good changeup, and solid command.
Though besides the actual question that he asks in the title, his main point is more about asking why the Dodgers don't seem to teach the pitch to their minor leaguers. Of all the guys coming up through the system, I think only Brent Leach has a plus changeup. I really can't think of anybody else off the top of my head, and that's really disturbing. Maybe i'll write a rant about it later or something. :o
ESPN: Jerry Crasnick names Ronald Belisario as one of the top rookies in the majors. In the article, even Ned Colletti gives credit to his scouting staff on this one. Even though i'm a big believer in sabermetrics, I also believe that scouting can have huge impacts on the organization if the scouts in question know what they are doing. The Dodgers seem to know what they are doing, and it's been that way since Dan Evans revamped the system.
Sons Of Steve Garvey: Did the free parking experiment work? Damn right. People respond to incentives?! Shocking.
Sons Of Steve Garvey: Bill Plaschke throws a bitchfest about Manny again. I was gonna write about this too, but why bother when somebody got to it first.
Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness: Bill Plaschke is a hypocrite? Excuse me while I feign surprise!
True Blue L.A.: The Dodgers have apparently signed draft pick Brett Wallach.
Los Angeles Times: Jerry Crowe tells the tale of Darren Dreifort. Personally though, any sympathy I would have for the guy is sorta negated by the fact that he made millions of dollars by rehabbing and being a surgery experiment for doctors.
Fan Graphs: Yes, fielding metrics are relative to their environment. This is why you want a 2-3 year sample size to gauge a player's true ability.
The Hardball Times: How reliable is Ultimate Zone Rating?
MLB Trade Rumors: Cuban left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman defected and plans to play baseball in America next year. He claims to be 21-years-old, but there is speculation that he could be 26-years-old. It makes a huge difference to teams because he looks somewhat raw, but either way, he's quite a talent. If Chapman is actually 21-years-old, then I would really like the Dodgers to pursue him.
Slate: I've always wondered why the Dodgers still use the slightly offset camera angle. I agree that it's outdated as well.
Ump Bump: Sarah Green gives us her "All-Hot Team". Personally, I am incensed at the exclusion of Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier.
