Kasey Coffman homered on the first pitch of the game and scored three times as Arizona State beat Columbia 10-5 to eliminate the Lions at the Fullerton regional Sunday.
The Sun Devils (37-21-1) were facing regional top seed Cal State Fullerton later Sunday night, needing a win to avoid elimination.
''We always look for (Kasey) kind of get us going, especially coming to the yard and it's elimination day,'' Arizona State coach Tim Esmay said. ''To have Kasey (homer on) the first pitch of the game let everyone know that we were ready to go.''
Nathaniel Causey also homered for Arizona State, which scored 10 runs on just five hits. Columbia (28-21), which earned the first NCAA tournament win in school history Saturday, issued five walks and hit two batters to help the Sun Devils.
''We did some things uncharacteristic for us as far as free bases,'' Lions coach Brett Boretti said, ''and if you do that against a good team, it's going to cost you.''
After Coffman's leadoff homer, the Lions briefly held the lead in the first after Joey Falcone hit a two-run double to make it 2-1. But ASU retook the lead for good with a six-run third inning that chased Columbia starter Stefan Olson from the game.
The Lions actually outhit the Sun Devils 12-5, but stranded 13 runners, including seven in scoring position.
Neither starting pitcher made it out of the third inning. Olson (1-2) allowed six runs on three hits and three walks in two-plus innings in his first start of the year while ASU's Zak Miller allowed three runs on five hits and four walks in 2 2-3 innings.
Alex Blackford (5-1) picked up the win after allowing two runs in 3 1-3 innings of relief.
Zack Tax pitched five no-hit innings of relief for the Lions, who saw their season come to an end after beating New Mexico 6-5 in 13 innings on Saturday night.
''I told the guys at our meeting at the end that they're the best team in Columbia baseball history,'' Boretti said. ''They set a new record for Division I wins and winning the first regional game in the history of the program, we're very proud of that.''
BEST OF MAXIM
During the Arizona State vs. Cal State Fullerton baseball game last night, the teams and fans had an entertaining surprise in the second inning. Recently, we’ve seen squirrels or birds causing a ruckus on the baseball field, but this time, it was a much cuter little critter – a husky. The canine escaped from its owner and headed straight for the outfield.
The pooch ran around...
Who let the dog out? Who?
Last night's NCAA Baseball Tournament game between Arizona State and Cal State Fullerton received an uninvited pooch guest in the second inning of play.
A husky somehow made its way onto Goodwin Field and caused a delay when he ran into the warning track near the outfield:
BEST DELAY EVER!
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Arizona State was shut out for the first time all season Saturday night, and it came at the most inopportune time.
Sierra Romero hit a two-run homer, Sara Driesenga threw a seven-hit shutout and eighth-seeded Michigan beat ASU 2-0 Sunday night in a Women's College World Series elimination game, ending the Sun Devils' season.
Fans watching Arizona State and Cal State Fullerton already had to wait two hours for the matchup to start after a 13-inning affair between Columbia and New Mexico pushed back the game’s start time.
Then, midway through the second inning, they had to wait another minute and a half while a husky wandered aimlessly around the field. No one seems to know where the husky came from...
Many of the offers for Ypsilanti (Mich.) standout, Jaylen Johnson, are coming from schools closer to his neck of the woods, but venturing westward is an option the forward is seriously considering. Johnson has been targeted early by Arizona State and according to his coach, Steve Brooks, his player is showing serious interest in the Sun Devils who have already offered him a scholarship.
FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) -- Kasey Coffman homered on the first pitch of the game and scored three times as Arizona State beat Columbia 10-5 to stay alive and eliminate the Lions in the Fullerton Regional on Sunday.
The Sun Devils (37-21-1) were scheduled to face regional top seed Cal State Fullerton later Sunday night, needing a win to avoid elimination.
Nathaniel Causey also homered...
This is something you won’t see every day. During the Cal State Fullerton-Arizona State baseball game on Saturday night, there was a brief delay in the game when a Husky ran onto the baseball field. The dog first tried to escape through the right field wall, but eventually made its way back towards left field where it was let out off the field.
Brandon Smith had a dismal career as a receiver at Arizona State due to a litany of injuries. Refusing to give up on his NFL dream, Smith spent last year making the move to cornerback. Shortly before going to Green Bay as a tryout player at the rookie camp, Smith's mom died.
Quinn Bailey was perhaps not overly surprised to get an offer from Arizona State, but it was nonetheless pleasing for the local Higley High School offensive lineman to hear the news in-person tonight in Tempe.
