Dodgers outfield prospect Alfredo Silverio, who was seriously injured in an off-season auto accident, underwent successful Tommy John surgery Wednesday and is out for the 2012 season. The surgery was to reconstruct his right (throwing) elbow. Silverio had not played since the January accident in his native Dominican Republic, mostly because of a serious concussion that has since been resolved.

Silverio, 25, was coming off a breakout 2011 season with the Double-A Lookouts, where he posted a .306/.340/.542 line with 16 home runs, 42 doubles, and a Southern League-leading 18 triples. He was ranked as highly as number four in prospect rankings over the winter by Baseball America. I had him rated as the Dodgers third best prospect when I did my rankings back in February.

The timing of this is unfortunate, as this puts Silverio out of action for at least twelve to eighteen months. Silverio was all but destined to make an appearance in the Dodgers outfield this season after a strong 2011 showing, but now it is now an uphill battle for the young prospect. This is without a doubt the biggest setback Silverio has faced thus far. At the age of 25, this is going to be a setback that may prove to be more significant than it would be for a younger player. The biggest question facing Silverio will be if he can bounce back and re-establish himself as a legitimate prospect after this overwhelming roadblock. This is undoubtedly a huge blow, but hopefully not something the persevering Silverio will let derail him from reaching his bright future as a major league baseball player.
