Martin Truex Jr. dominated the STP 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway on Sunday, but as the handling went away on his No. 56 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota, another Toyota, the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing entry of Denny Hamlin, was able to get by for the lead with 31 laps remaining in the 267-lap race to drive on to the win. “I’d love to see one of his (Michael Waltrip’s) cars win,” Hamlin said in victory lane. “They put together a great program.” The win was Hamlin’s second of the season. Jimmie Johnson overcame an early-race pit road lug nut issue to finished third in the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. A pair of Roush Fenway Racing Fords, the No. 17 of Matt Kenseth and the No. 16 of points leader Greg Biffle, finished fourth and fifth. Pole sitter A.J. Allmendinger led the first 44 laps of the race until running out of fuel while heading toward pit road during the first round of green flag pit stops and then soon after dropping a cylinder.
