For the first time since 1998, a Michigan-Michigan State basketball game will matter. Well, maybe that's a little dramatic, but tonight's 7 o'clock tip at Crisler Center adds an element unseen in those 13 years -- each team is ranked.

With less than 4 minutes left in a three-point game, the player Michigan had the most trouble with Tuesday night at Crisler Center took a seat on the bench. Derrick Nix had scored 13 points and had helped Michigan State dig out of a nine-point hole and take a three-point lead. The No. 9 Spartans didn't score another basket as MSU lost its third straight to No. 20 U-M, 60-59.
The lesson was one the newcomers hoped to avoid throughout the course of their Michigan State basketball careers, but at least now they know. This is what it feels like to lose to Michigan
