From Press Release The North Shore Navigators have announced that Manager Richie Hebner will not return as manager for the 2013 season. Hebner has been hired by the Toronto Blue Jays to serve as the hitting coach for their Double-A affiliate, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The Navigators have hired Peabody native Jon Cahill to replace Hebner as the manager for the 2013 season. Cahill is in his second season with the Navigators, spending last season as an assistant coach and the Director of Baseball Operations. ^^^ “While we will miss Richie, Jon will transition perfectly into his role as manager,” said General Manager Bill Terlecky. “Cahill’s familiarity with the players, having recruited them to play here, as well as his experience as professional player, coach and manager combined with his past as a Collegiate All-American will resonate well with our players.” Cahill, born and raised in Peabody, graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell in 2001. At UMass Lowell, Cahill played four years of baseball, where he was an essential part of the 2001 Riverhawks team that reached the Division II Collegiate World Series for the first time in school history. Cahill was also inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008. Upon graduation, Cahill signed as an undrafted free agent infielder with the Los Angeles Angels organization, where he spent three seasons reaching as high as Double-A. Cahill also spent two seasons with the Washington Wildthings, an independent team from the Frontier League. Cahill ended his professional career with a batting average of .268 and a fielding percentage well over .960. Aside from experience in the game of baseball, Cahill brings many years of coaching to the Navigators. Cahill was a hitting coach for two years for independent league teams before serving as a manager for the Traverse City (Mich.) Beach Bums for two seasons. In his final season as manager, Cahill led the Beach Bums to a second place finish, giving up the least amount of runs by any team throughout the season. Cahill currently serves as the assistant coach at Endicott College. “I am excited about the new position with the Navigators,” said Cahill. “I love managing the game and all the strategic elements that come with each game. I want to thank Bill and Salvi Sports Group for believing in me and giving me this great opportunity. I had a great experience coaching under Richie Hebner last year, and like other managers I have coached with, I will take a little of Richie’s coaching style into my own as we try to bring home another championship to the city of Lynn.” For up-to-the-minute North Shore Navigator news, please visit our website at www.nsnavs.com, “liking” us at www.facebook.com/nsnavs or by following us at www.twitter.com/NSNavigators.
