After nearly eight months of recovery, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has finally been cleared to resume full baseball activities. Jeter has been taking grounders and playing long toss at 180 feet for a few days, but on Wednesday he was fully medically cleared. Jeter was examined by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte and is now permitted to run on his surgically repaired left ankle, and participate in all baseball activities. In his absence the Yankees have failed to get any production out of the shortstop position. Heading into Thursday, Yankees shortstops had hit just .215, with an on-base percentage of .283 and an OPS of .565. Last season Jeter hit .316 with a .362 on-base percentage, an OPS of .791. He also had 32 doubles, 15 home runs, 99 runs and an MLB-best 216 hits. The 13-time All-Star has been out since breaking his ankle last October during the postseason. He suffered a setback during his rehab in spring training when a new break was discovered in his ankle. The 38-year-old is expected to be out until at least the All-Star break and possibly even longer. The fact that he is now allowed to resume full baseball activities is a huge jump forward on his road back to the Yankees’ lineup. After a marathon 18-inning loss to the Oakland A’s on Thursday afternoon, the Yankees sit in second place in the American League East, just 3.5 games behind the first-place Boston Red Sox.
