Jack Nicklaus loves absolutely everything about Augusta National. But being reminded how many years have elapsed since he won the first time, let alone the first time he made the drive up Magnolia Lane? Not so much. Nicklaus sat in the interview room at the Masters for an hour Tuesday, and had more than enough material for two. He grimaced when club member Ed Herlihy introduced him by saying ''he returns to Augusta National 50 years removed from his first of a record six jackets,'' and turned wistful for a moment at the end. ''I can't imagine anybody having more fun doing what I've done and getting paid for it,'' Nicklaus said, ''and also being able to sit here in front of you guys at 73 years old, so I can spout a bunch of stuff that I had no idea whether you were listening or not, or care about.'' In between, Nicklaus had that same roomful of reporters eating out of the palm of his hand. He spun so many entertaining tales...

Jack Nicklaus’ caddy hits horrible shot during Par 3 Challenge

One of the great traditions of the Masters is the Par 3 Challenge at Augusta.  Often times players will let their family members, kids or girlfriends caddy for them, while they have fun during the event.  Jack Nicklaus decided to let his caddy tee off on #9 of the Par 3 Challenge because he has never played golf before, and let’s just say it showed. I’m surprised that they...

Golden Bear, Tiger barely converse

Jack Nicklaus has shared his secrets and strategy about Augusta National with anyone who wanted to learn from a six-time Masters champion, a list that includes Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Nicolas Colsaerts. But not Tiger Woods. Nicklaus said he's never had a sit-down with the man who is trying to break his records. In fact, he said they hardly talk at all. "I never...

Big Three honor tradition at Augusta

They dominated major championships past. Once they were heroes. Now they are called honorary starters. The job description is simple enough: Tee up one ball, make one swing, wave to the crowd, shake a bunch of hands, get out of the way so the Masters can start for real. It couldn't be easy. Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus won 13 Masters among them, and now they...

Is Tiger primed, or past his prime?

As only he can, Jack Nicklaus cut to the heart of what is the most important major of Tiger Woods' career. "He's played very, very well this spring," the Golden Bear said on Tuesday. "If he wins here, I think that it would be a very large step towards regaining confidence. "He has not won a major in (five) years ... if he figures it out here, it will...

Legendary Jack Nicklaus says Tiger Woods will break his majors record

Jack Nicklaus believes that it is only a matter of time before Tiger Woods breaks his all-time majors record of 18 victories.

Tiger-proof? He can prove otherwise

Thirteen years ago, Earl Woods sat in his Cypress, Calif., living room, dressed in an old-school, heather-gray sweat suit but with no shoes and socks. He chain-smoked probably a pack of cigarettes during a four-hour interview in that house where he raised a prodigy named Tiger. Your correspondent didn't see famous artifacts such as the high chair Tiger escaped from to grab a...

The 5 greatest shots at the Masters

No other major championship has a greater collection of signature shots than the Masters, mainly because it's the only major held on the same course. And it helps that Augusta National is such a course that allows for such big moments. There was the ''shot heard `round the world'' and a shot right out of ''Bubba golf.'' There has been an eagle...

Eubanks: Par-5s should determine Masters champ

To understand The Masters tournament, you have to understand the man who founded it. Bob Jones was more than a sports hero. He was a Depression Era symbol of hope, a sliver of good news in a time when starvation was real and entire families lived under scrap-medal lean-tos in Central Park. In 1930, when Jones won all four of golf's major championships in a single year, a feat...
