Sons of Steve Garvey:
MARLINS 8, DODGERS 6
Jason Schmidt and Jeff Weaver both regressed to their means today, collectively allowing eight runs over six innings. The Dodgers gamely scraped together four runs on James Loney's two-RBI double and Russell Martin's two-run homer in the sixth, but a ninth-inning rally came up short when Matt Kemp fouled out with a man on first to end the game.
Maybe because of the blowout (the Dodgers were down 8-0 by the fourth inning), Weaver took out some of his frustration by hitting Hanley Ramirez on the shoulder in the sixth. The Marlins' Burke Badenhop responded by hitting Orlando Hudson in the butt the next inning, and that was that.
We're not advocating endangering players, but it was nice to see a Dodger pitcher show some huevos on the mound. Players hate losing as much as fans do, and if this loss was good for nothing else, it reminded everybody that the team with the best record in the majors also has a little edge.
