Texas Rangers’ pitcher, Tanner Scheppers, was the victim of an aggravated assault Thursday night by a group of men while he was out for a bite to eat. The incident occurred somewhere between his hotel and the restaurant downtown Cleveland. His team, the Texas Rangers, are in town this weekend to play the Cleveland Indians. Scheppers received a contusion to the left eye and some facial abrasions. Scheppers was taken to the hospital for observation and that explains why he wasn’t available for Friday night’s game.
Not sure why a police report wasn’t filed but the Cleveland police department are aware of the situation and mentioned its a common thing that goes on around here. Tanner believes he was sucker punched and has mention that the perpetrators did not take anything from him. He did give a statement though:
“One of those freak things,” Scheppers said. “I was just getting food and was blindsided. … It’s something you don’t want to be talking about. You want to be talking about baseball things.”
Tanner has pitched in 46 games this season with a 5-1 record, 1.74 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 32 strikeouts. Tanner should be fine to continue and shouldn’t miss any games.
