Earlier today, the White Sox requested waivers on DeWayne Wise to allow him his conditional release. He had been on the disabled list since June 2nd with a hamstring injury and was currently on a rehab assignment for AAA Charlotte. This ends his second stint with the team, as his first came in 2008 and 2009. With the team out of contention, having a 35 year old backup outfielder just didn't make much sense with younger candidates like Jordan Danks and Blake Tekotte around. It makes more sense to see if younger, cheaper options could hold down that spot on the roster heading into next season rather than pay somebody like Wise to do so. However, Wise will always be looked at as a memorable name in White Sox history. Obviously, his greatest moment in a White Sox uniform is "The Catch," but DeWayne was a sparkplug off the bench during both of his stints with the White Sox. Down the stretch in 2008, he ultimatley beat out Nick Swisher for the final outfield spot, as he and a little bit of Brian Anderson manned that third outfield position alongside Ken Griffey Jr. and Jermaine Dye. He hit a HUGE grand slam in a tie ballgame in the bottom of the eighth against Detroit late in September of that year, and actually led the White Sox in RBI in the 2008 ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays. Last season, he got some key hits off the bench as well and saw plenty of at-bats in the final months. Statistically, Wise hit .243 with 14 home runs, 54 RBI, and 26 steals in 216 games and 498 at-bats with the White Sox. It's a pedestrian line, and we've seen players with those numbers come and go, but none of those reserves are remembered quite like Wise for "The Catch." In case you haven't seen it in a while, rewatch one of the most memorable plays in team history here.
