Detroit’s Max Scherzer is the favorite, but should he stumble Yu Darvish is ready to surge ahead for pitching’s top honor—the Cy Young Award.
When your pitcher ‘only’ strikes out seven in a game and it’s a disappointment either your nuts or you have someone special on your hands. For the Texas Ranger and pitcher Yu Darvish it is definitely the latter.
Against the Seattle Mariners Sunday Darvish struck out seven over 7 1/3 innings of work while giving up seven hits, four walks, and three earned runs. With the exception of the walks the outing would be considered a good one.
That is, it would be a good one for most pitchers, but Darvish has the Rangers and their fans kind of spoiled. In his last outing he struck out 15 and allowed a single hit and run. True the time before that he gave up eight hits and three runs while striking out just six, but in the two games prior to that he struck out a total of 25 while allowing just a single run....

AJ Pierzynski finished his night 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs. The fantasy night really belongs to the Texas Rangers lineup once again. ARLINGTON, Texas It takes a village to beat a pitcher like Felix Hernandez.
In baseball terms, that means contributions from up and down the lineup, which is exactly what the Rangers got in Saturday's 15-3 win against the Seattle ace.
Specifically, the Rangers got a whopping five RBI from the number nine spot in the order shared by David Murphy and Craig Gentry.
The Texas Rangers plan to purchase Travis Blackley's contract from Triple-A Round Rock for the left-hander to start Tuesday against the Houston Astros, the team that just traded him.
Texas, which acquired Blackley last week, will have to make another move before Tuesday's game to add Blackley to its 25-man roster.
Blackley will fill in for Alexi Ogando, who has an inflamed...

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- The Texas Rangers have put together the highest-scoring inning in the major leagues this season.
They scored 11 runs in the third against Houston on Monday night, their biggest inning since scoring 11 runs in the fifth inning against Tampa Bay on Sept. 26, 2009.
The last major league team to score as many runs in an inning was St. Louis on July 21, 2012...
Leonys Martin and Elvis Andrus know how to get things going at the top of the Texas Rangers lineup.
Against the Houston Astros, they weren't alone in making things happen.
Martin and Andrus each scored three runs for AL West-leading Texas, including twice each in an 11-run inning that was the biggest in the majors this season, in a 16-5 victory Monday night.
It all starts with Leonys Martin and Elvis Andrus.
When the top two batters are getting on base and wreaking havoc on the base paths the Texas Rangers are at their best offensively.
Look no further than Monday night when Martin and Andrus sparked the Rangers’ to the biggest inning in the big leagues this year — an 11-run third — en route to a 16-5 shellacking of the Houston...
Jurickson Profar hit an RBI single before scoring on a suicide squeeze in Texas' five-run inning off Felix Hernandez, and the Rangers went on to a 15-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Saturday night.
The AL West-leading Rangers, who have won 15 of 18 games, finished with a season high in runs after an eight-run eighth in which Profar had another RBI single.
Almost casual the afternoon shift Max Scherzer worked Sunday at Comerica Park in running his staggering 2013 record to 18-1 all courtesy of the Tigers’ 6-3 victory over the Royals at sold-out Comerica Park.
Scherzer overpowered the Royals on a day when the Tigers mustered up 12 hits with Miguel Cabrera handling the brunt of Detroit’s offense as is his habit.
Despite a string of sub-.500 opponents, the Texas Rangers have cooled off from a torrid stretch that culminated with a sweep of the Houston Astros.
The Rangers will try to get rolling again and protect their slim lead atop the AL West during another series against the Astros that begins Monday night.
Texas (71-53) is in the middle of a stretch of 24 consecutive games against teams...
This afternoon is definitely shaping up to be one that showcases dominant pitching all over the map. Several of the game’s best arms will be on the bump for their respective teams. This list will be headlined by the likes of Max Scherzer, Yu Darvish, Matt Harvey, Adam Wainwright and Madison Bumgarner. All of these [...]

The reigning Triple Crown winner became the third player since 1921 to have at least 40 homers and 120 RBIs while batting .350 or better through 116 games,...
