The Michigan Wolverines (5-1) cruised past an out of sync UCLA team 79-63 to finish the Maui Invitational in impressive fashion with a 2-1 record. Michigan used a 13-0 run to jump out to an early 19-8 lead and never looked back. UCLA made a couple of mini-runs, but were too discombobulated to ever seriously threaten the Wolverines. Jon Horford paced U-M in the opening stanza with 12 points and 7 boards.

Tim Hardaway Jr.

The Bruins took their best shot in the second half and closed the U-M lead to 5 points, but Tim Hardaway Jr. kept Michigan ahead by attacking the rim for easy buckets. Hardaway Jr. was clearly the best player on the court and he took over in the second half, earning isportsweb.com Player of the Game honors. He finished the game with 20 points on 8-13 shooting. Hardaway also dished out 5 assists and pulled down 4 rebounds.

Zack Novak chipped in a career 22 high  points on 7-8 shooting, including 4-5 from beyond the arc.

Evan Smotrycz didn’t have his smoothest performance, but he was gritty and tallied 7 points, 8 boards and 4 assists.

Stu Douglass had his best shooting performance of the season because he was catching and shooting. Stu is at his best when he catches and shoots in rhythm. Put him on an island and give him a wide-open shot with time to gather himself and for some reason he struggles. On this night he was in rhythm and shot 3-4 from the field and 1-2 from three-point range.

Plays of the game

Late in the 1st half Trey Burke went coast-to-coast and looked like Barry Sanders as he spun past Jeremy Anderson in the lane for a lay up. He was fouled on the shot and converted the 3 point play to put Michigan up 31-23.

Midway through the second half Hardaway Jr. came off a couple of screens and took a feed from Jordan Morgan. He cut right through the heart of UCLA’s defense for a thunderous dunk that put Michigan up 55-45.

With 8:10 left to play Hardaway Jr knocked down a three-ball from 25 feet to put Michigan up 63-47 and that dagger pretty much sealed the game for Michigan.

Michigan returns home in great shape with a 5-1 record. The Wolverines will be off until Tuesday when they travel to Virginia to take on the Cavaliers as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
