Thoughts on the Maryland’s 62-42 loss to Alabama in Puerto Rico.

TERPS AS COLD AS ICE

Maryland didn’t shoot the ball particularly well in their season opening win versus UNC Wilmington, missing all 9 of their attempts from beyond the three-point line. Those woes continued for Maryland versus Alabama in Puerto Rico. The Terps shot a woeful 26.5 percent from the field against the Tide, making just 2 of 12 three-point attempts, one of which was a desperation attempt to end the half. Leading scorer Terrell Stoglin did not make a field goal and the Baltimore duo of Nick Faust and Sean Mosley shot a combined 2 of 14.

THE KILLER P’S

The frontcourt duo of James Padgett and Ashton Pankey faced what will arguably be their stiffest test of the year in only the second start in each of their careers. And while they both struggled at times, they each competed hard, grabbing rebounds and  converting put backs. Padgett, the Terps leading scorer on the night, finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds. Pankey finished with 4 points and 10 rebounds as well as a block. Each is now battle tested early on and should be ready for whatever matchup is thrown at them the rest of the year. The addition of Alex Len next month should only help make each of them better.

MISSING PE’SHON AT THE POINT

After only two games it’s become clear just how important Pe’Shon Howard is for this Terps team. Mark Turgeon felt that Stoglin was better utilized off the ball where he could get more open looks. When Howard went down it was assumed by most that Stoglin would resume his point guard duties. Instead Turgeon turned to Faust and the offense looks stagnant. Stoglin clearly needs the ball in his hands as he tries to create scoring opportunities for himself. At this point it might be the team’s only chance to win until Pe’Shon Howard returns.
