MINNEAPOLIS Trevor Mbakwe is coming back.
In a YouTube video released Monday, the University of Minnesota men's basketball team announced that Mbakwe will return to the Gophers for the 2012-13 season and put his professional basketball career on hold. Mbakwe was granted a sixth year of eligibility after tearing his ACL on Nov. 27.
In the video, soon-to-be senior Rodney Williams...

G Armelin granted release from Minnesota
Minnesota has granted guard Chip Armelin his release from the program so he can transfer, clearing the way for star forward Trevor Mbakwe's return for a sixth season.
The Golden Gophers announced Armelin's release on Monday. The sophomore averaged 5.2 points and 13.7 minutes per game. But his playing time dwindled down the stretch last season, and he requested his release...

A special guest post by Dan Hanner: The Future is here
Something special is happening, and we aren't the only ones noticing. Statistical guru, college-basketball extraordinaire, and occasional Gopher observer Dan Hanner broke down the team's transformation by comparing the last six games to the season as a whole. Being born in Minnesota and witnessing the Gophers previous N.I.T. title runs in person, it still isn't obvious...

Gophers face mid-major powerhouse Washington in NIT Final Four
Mission accomplished. The Golden Gophers' post-season has already been a resounding success, and the opportunity to play two more games against solid competition in the arena that claims to be the most famous (the Roman Colosseum humbly disagrees) could lead to a mass outbreak of irrational exuberance. Over the last few weeks, we learned that this team could win basketball games...

Fans Losing Patience for Tubby Smith
Fans Losing Patience for Tubby Smith
Last week, men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith was honored with his 100th win at Minnesota and first postseason tournament win since he first took the job five years ago. It’s a nice omen to his efforts at the Gophers, but it cannot conceal the fact that his basketball is underachieving and patience is running thin.
A recent Star...

Big Ten Tournament: Gophers upset tournament-hopeful Northwestern
The Big Ten Tournament has gotten off to a hot and heavy start on Day 1. The 3rd game was no exception as the Northwestern Wildcats and Minnesota Golden Gophers locked up in a fierce battle. On a day when Senior John Shurna needed to lead his team to victory it was Minnesota’s freshman point guard Andre Hollins that carried the day. Minnesota pulled off a first round upset with...

Gophers Rodney Williams: most overrated NBA Draft prospect ever?
Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Rodney Williams is a bonafide NBA draft prospect. Not so much this year, but for 2013 (where we have him projected as a mid-2nd rounder), and I can’t for the life of me understand why. (But I’m a NFL draftnik, not an NBA draftnik) When fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives this week, the 6-7, 205 junior forward from Minneapolis just...

2011-2012 Returning Golden Gophers Preview
College basketball is a young man’s game. Every year a freshman superstar steals the hearts and minds of even the most casual of fans, and take his team on a whirl wind ride before dashing off to the NBA to pursue fame, fortune, and failed hip-hop careers. For a few very select programs, chasing the [...]
